About this property

This truly characterful cottage lies in the picturesque village of Troutbeck, midway between Ambleside and Windermere. With parts of the cottage dating back 400 years, High Fold offers an idyllic bolthole for a romantic getaway, perfect for unwinding in this special Lakeland location. Entering beyond the covered porch into this lovely home you will find the open-plan living area, boasting charm and character throughout, with exposed beams, feature period oak floors and a woodburning stove for those snug nights on the sofa. Should you choose to cook, the kitchen is equipped with a handful of amenities including an electric oven and hob, microwave and a fridge, and a small dining table for two.

Discover the attractive bedroom, home to a double bed and served by a lovely bathroom offering you the choice of a relaxing soak in the bath or a refreshing shower with the overhead shower, so you can decide how to best prepare for the day. Outside, a large sloping garden is the perfect spot to sit and relax whilst listening to the tumbling stream flow against the backdrop of the Troutbeck Valley or take an afternoon stroll over the rolling hills, ideal for nature lovers. The quaint village of Troutbeck is renowned for its numerous listed buildings and strong community with a village shop and a tearoom, a church and an excellent pub serving sumptuous meals and local ales.

Plan a visit to the town of Windermere with its shopping facilities, a number of cinemas, and whilst here, hop on board a cruise to enjoy a circular trip on historic steamers to soak up the views of mountain scenery, secluded bays and the many wooded islands from the gentle beauty of Lake Windermere. From diving ducks to piranha, the Lakes Aquarium in Newby Bridge is home to a diverse aquatic wildlife, while the Lakeland Wildlife Oasis Zoo is where you can see over 100 species of animals, including snow leopards and meerkats. Other attractions in the area include Grizedale Forest, Beatrix Potter's 'Hill Top’ former home now run by the National Trust, and Wray Castle, a mock-Gothic castle with masses of indoor and outdoor space.

With plenty to keep you busy, High Fold is that perfect base for a well-deserved getaway to the Lake District.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.

The cottage is extremely cosy, warm and comfortable. The location is beautiful. The owner came to greet us and was very friendly and helpful, especially as bad weather was forecast and she gave us tips about which roads to use if it became icy/snowy. There are two nice pubs a 20/25 minute walk away and we also walked into Windermere which took about 90 minutes. The cottage had everything we needed for our stay and the owner offered to provide anything we needed which wasn't in the house (we didn't need to take her up on that). We brought our own condiments and basic food supplies as we always do but washing up liquid, kitchen roll, loo roll, bin bags etc were provided. Would definitely recommend a stay here, especially if you want peace & quiet and don't mind a short drive to the larger areas.
