Old Belfield is on a private drive and is quiet and secluded, yet not far from bustling Bowness. There is a way to walk into town avoiding the main road, which is safe for pushchairs. It's hilly but pleasant and takes 15-20mins. The house has efficient central heating, we lit the stove in the lounge just once. Overall facilities were pretty good, but the maintenance seems to be a little lacking. Combi boiler provides hot water, but was not always working well in the kitchen ! Also, washing machine was out of order since July, we stayed the first week of October. The garden is great for older children, full of rabbit holes, but was too steep for our toddler to explore.

We've just returned from a fantastic week at Old Belfield. The house is perfectly located - a minute's drive from the centre of Bowness, a short walk from Bowness Bay, but in an exclusive, quiet wooded area. You wouldn't think you were a such a short distance from such a bustling town. The house is grand and very spacious, with beautiful views from from most of the rooms, either to the surrounding woodland or and across the tops of the trees to the the lake. The kitchen is at the rear of the house (so no view!) and is a 'galley' style. As such it's only practical for one person to work in at a time. Having said that, it's very well equipped with an oven, hob, dishwasher, microwave, etc. The bedrooms were spacious and airy, with plenty of storage space. The towels and bed linen were all provided, and were very clean and fresh. Toilietries were also to a high standard. The bath is nice and big, too! The central heating is excellent - it gets to work straight away. The WiFi was also stable and fast. I was a bit nervous about what we would find after reading a couple of the recent less-than-favourable reviews, but we needn't have worried. Yes, the driveway does need work but there's a fairly obvious 'line' you can follow to avoid the potholes. The washing machine was still out of use for our stay, but the staff at Lakes Cottage Holidays collected our washing mid-week and returned it laundered and dry later that day. We were staying with our children, aged two and seven. Hand-on-heart we can't recommend Old Belfield to families with very young children. The gardens are beautiful, but not enclosed enough to let a two-year-old run around without close supervision. The staircase is longer and higher than usual, and the swinging double doors into the living room (which have safety glass in them) are quite tightly sprung and close with quite a bit of force. Thankfully we'd brought along a stairgate and some guards to stop doors jamming on fingers. I'm glad we did, as we would have struggled without them. However, it was a different story for our seven-year-old who had the run of the place inside and out, and loved it. Yes, there's a little bit of crumbling plaster, the odd damp patch high on a wall and the (very) occasional tired bit of furniture, but the building is a few hundred years old. It didn't do anything to spoil our enjoyment of a great house in a perfect location. We had a brilliant stay.

The house was fabulous: spacious, amazing ceilings and a history to go with it! It was fantastic to wake up every morning and see Windermere through the trees and easy to get to roads which could take us to other lakes and places of interest.
