About this property

Nestled against the charming backdrop of Newby Bridge is this historic terraced cottage. It sits on the route of the historic Lakeside & Haverthwaite Steam Railway, whose steam trains trundle along the garden’s edge, within the outstanding Lake District National Park. 7 Railway Cottages offers a perfect, pet-friendly base for a family of four, welcoming children both young and older, or for couples wanting to get away from it all. A generous boot room gives you space as you enter the property to kick off your muddy boots after a day on the fells, hang your coats and dump your bags. The kitchen/diner is a great size, for hanging out in, over breakfast or playing boardgames or relaxing with the papers. There’s a dining table for four which can be extended further for special family meals. You’ll find everything you need in the contemporary and fully equipped kitchen for whipping up your favourite meals. There’s a separate well kitted out utility room which means laundry and dirty dishes don’t have to clutter your kitchen/diner space. The living room is a haven to return to at the end of the day, featuring plush seating, a woodburning stove, and a Smart TV, perfect for relaxing with loved ones. The staircase leads you to a stunning master bedroom on the right, with a good size bathroom and a delightful bunk bedroom on the left. The Farrow and Ball pallet that the rest of the house enjoys extends to the upstairs. The well-presented double bedroom offers spectacular views over open countryside, a perfect sight to wake up to on your stay in the Lakes. This is also the ideal spot to take pictures of the steam train as it chugs past the end of the enclosed garden. Choose how you want to start your day in the family bathroom, either with a lazy morning bubble bath, or a quick refreshing shower. Outside, there is a lovely, enclosed garden to the front, with a patio area, and uninterrupted views. At the back there is ample parking. One minute walk from the property is the award-winning Swan Hotel and Spa, which has great beer, a fantastic pub grub menu and a fine dining restaurant. Not to mention a 5* Spa for when you fancy a little extra pampering. Newly opened for 2023 is the West Windermere Way - a National Park walk that takes you from Newby Bridge to Lake Windermere. There’s a great nature trail and playground out the back of the hotel that can keep kids amused for hours. Day or night the Swan is such a short stroll away it gives you the option of food and drink on tap with no washing up, and no designated driver! There is a really well stocked convenience store just moments away in Newby Bridge where you can get all your essentials and more (a Costa Express) or there’s a Booths a short drive away in Ulverston. There’s fantastic walking in this part of the lakes, whether it’s a good fell walk you are after, or a long beach or promenade stroll. Newby Bridge is within a short drive of Cartmel, Bowness on Windermere, Windermere, Ambleside, Kendal, Ulverston and Grange over Sands. Coniston is also very accessible. There are endless gourmet pubs dotted around the area and an abundance of places to eat and drink in any of the towns. There are even two Michelin Star restaurants nearby. Days out within easy reach include boat trips on Windermere, swinging through treetops at Go Ape in Grizedale Forest, trying your luck at horse riding at Bigland Hall, or discovering thrilling watersports activities on Coniston Water. There's even plenty to do on a rainy day, from Cliffhanger Escape Rooms to the Lakeland Motor Museum, and the Lakes Aquarium. Don't miss the chance to visit Fell Foot Park (National Trust), just paces from the house or slide on your walking boots and ramble up Gummers Howe, before treating yourself to Sunday Lunch at the renowned Mason’s Arms on Strawberry bank. Whatever your taste in Lake District holidays, 7 Railway Cottages is the perfect base from which to enjoy it.

Named after the 1651 construction of a stone bridge with five arches across the River Leven, the tiny community of Newby Bridge takes its name from the bridge's architectural feature. Haverthwaite and Newby Bridge are connected by the historic Furness Railway, one of the oldest standard gauge steam railways in Britain. Enjoy the naturally themed habitats at the Aquarium of the Lakes, which bring the history of the Lakes to life, or relax in one of the Lakeside Hotels with breathtaking views of Windermere and the surrounding fells. Bowness-on-Windermere is a beautiful place to spend the day, and nearby Gummer's How and Hawkshead are also worth visiting for their stunning scenery and quaint atmosphere, both of which attracted famous residents like William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter.

As we are old school we would of enjoyed a guest book to share things to do or recommend in the area

The whole cottage very clean. The beds were comfortable and there was everything that you needed for a self catering stay. A short walk to Lakeside opened up so much more of the lakes to explore. My only constructive feedback was that the garden was a bit overgrown, so felt like we couldn't sit outside to watch the train, but that could be easily sorted with a lawn mower and strimmer. I would definitely recommend staying here. Communication was brilliant too.

It's got everything you need. Clean and comfortable. The pub down the road does amazing food but it's recommended you book as it gets very busy. Would definitely love to come back.
