About this property

This is a fascinating property, a former bobbin mill with its' large waterwheel intact. Set into the hillside in a secluded secret valley less than a mile from Hawkshead, this wonderful heritage site allows guest to enjoy the tranquillity of a lovely location enhanced by the sound of the waterfall.
The cottage is simply furnished and allows guests to take a step back in time - perfect for birdwatchers, walkers or guests who simply enjoy getting away from it all and enjoying good company without television and other distractions.

Access to the cottage is down a track leading through an iron gate and across a field to a second gate leading to the hidden valley where Bobbin Mill Cottage is tucked away. The large oak door leads to a hallway with room for boots and coats. There is a large living/dining room with wood burning stove, beams, and many original features, and a variety of seating. There is a large oak refectory table perfect for family meals or playing games. The owners have provided games, local books and maps for guests. There is a CD player and a phone for incoming and local calls. A large basic flag-floored kitchen leads from the living room and has an electric cooker, fridge freezer and microwave.

Up the slate staircase (rather steep) there is a spacious bedroom with 2 single beds and 1 small double (4ft) bed, and a usable fireplace. Up a flight of wooden stairs is the bathroom with cast iron bath and basin and wc. Up another step is the large double bedroom with wooden floor, original fireplace and antiques. There is a door from this bedroom which leads onto the drive at the front of the cottage. Heating is by night storage heaters and woodburning stove and open fires.
There is a large wild garden area with stream crossed by slate bridges (children will need to be supervised). There is a swing from the horse chestnut tree, plenty of woodland to explore and an area of lawn for picnics.

Lovely, comfortable, well equipped cottage in a remote rural area but within a short distance of Hawkeshead. Plenty of good walks close by and we were very lucky with the weather. Enjoyed a very relaxing time. Liked the fact that there was no television or internet, so you could truly "Get away from it all". Good supply of wood provided for the wood burner and the added bonus of open fires in the bedrooms. Really enjoyed watching the birds come to feed at the window every morning. However, if you want your dog to roam the grounds off lead, this property isn't suitable. Due to it's location and for safety reasons, your dog needs to be on a lead. Personally, we didn't find this a problem but some owners may. Very unusual quirky cottage. Would definitely stay again.

Dramatically situated cottage, quirky but very attractive and full of character with some lovely old furniture. I would recommend it if you like peace, quiet and relaxing without TV or wi-fi. Children enjoyed the board games and swing but as stressed elsewhere, older children only due to big drops in the garden/woods (ours are 10 & 12 years old). Lots to do in the surrounding area, lovely walks and great to come home at the end of the day to somewhere without lots of other cars and noise.

Have just returned from a lovely holiday at the Bobbin Mill. Echoing other reviews below this is a basic cottage in a vintage style which personally I loved. Although it states that dogs are welcome, it would not be suitable for any that are interested in exploring due to the fast flowing stream and deep drops which I consider rather dangerous. However, my husband and I along with our three lovely medium sized dogs had a great week. Loved the kitchen, very basic but personally I found it beautiful.
