About this property

Riverbank is set within Stepping Stones House which is an historic country property, once owned by William Wordsworth's son, overlooking Rydal water and its famous stepping stones. Beautiful views in every direction, this lovely location is within walking distance of Ambleside and a short drive to Wordsworth's Dove Cottage in Grasmere. Within this 'picture postcard' rambling property are several holiday apartments. Each one is rated by Visit England as four star; having pretty comfortable interiors and each with their own front door leading into the garden and grounds. They offer a lovely and private home from home for you to enjoy your Ambleside cottage holiday. The ideal Lakeland retreat - beautiful views, fantastic walks straight from your door, an abundance of local wildlife including ducks, red deer, the occasional otter and red squirrel, open fires, a myriad of local pubs and restauarants, shops, cinema and of course amazing walks or cycles, Riverbank at Stepping Stones has it all.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.

But some practical aspects were frustrating. Keen as we are to conserve water the shower was unusable because the water was so hot and difficult to control. So we were forced to have baths, where we could control the cold water for safety reasons. We suggest you turn down the temperature of the hot water on the boiler. We also found a lack of crockery and cutlery. The cups provided were either tiny or enormous! If you provided a bit more of the above there would be enough to run a full dishwasher. Instructions for how to use the hob would be really useful. We found it a total mystery and got it going after about 45 minutes trying! A simple, illustrated paragraph on a laminated sheet would have been so helpful. Coffee machine was another mystery but we couldn't be bothered with it - no instructions! I know it would probably be hard to get a bigger sofa into the property because of the doors but the sofa was very small and not very comfortable. Unfortunately there were a lot of clothes moths, but this may have been a seasonal thing. But the bed was very comfortable so we always got a good night's sleep.

Perfect location for walks from the door to Grassmere or Ambleside and getting on the bus to go further afield. Very comfortable bed and all we needed in the kitchen - plenty of room and feeling of light indoors - and beautiful grounds with great place to sit and eat outside in better weather. We plan to rebook.
