About this property

This desirable holiday home is set in a beautiful location in the magnificent valley of Great Langdale, five and half miles from the thriving hub of Ambleside. Enjoying a great sense of peace and privacy surrounded by its own large well-tended garden, Rawfell offers a superb base for families looking for a relaxing retreat in a rural location. The cottage comes with a spacious, warming sitting room offering plenty of seating and complemented by a multi-fuel stove for those cosy nights in. Just behind is a pool table and a selection of books, games and DVDs to keep you occupied on a rainy day. Gather at the dining table in the farmhouse kitchen and crack open a bottle of wine and discuss the plans for week whilst the chef of the group prepares a tasty home-cooked meal, aided by the electric Aga cooker. Those with limited mobility can choose the ground-floor bedroom, which can be arranged as a twin or zip/link king-size on request. Discover three further bedrooms upstairs, comprising two king-size rooms, which both offer lovely views over the valley and garden, while there is also a tastefully decorated zip- link bedroom that benefits from its own en-suite facilities. Relish in the natural beauty of the Langdale Valley from your own extensive garden, which was a former prize-winner in the Lakes Parish in Bloom competition, with a host of delightful trees and shrubs, sweeping lawns and a sunny south-facing patio. There are breath-taking Langdale views all around, visible from most rooms in the house and some of Lakeland’s most dramatic walks are available from the doorstep. A number of pubs serving good food and drink are close by, the nearest being only half a mile away just down the valley. There are some incredible places in this area of the Lake District National Park, with Ambleside, Bowness-on-Windermere and Grasmere all nearby and offering a great range of things to do and see. Explore the woods at Orrest Head where you will discover unrivalled views of the lakes and even stumble upon a Gruffalo or hop in a car and head to Bowness-on-Windermere where you can enjoy a gentle stroll along the lakes or visit the local attractions such as The World of Beatrix Potter. Rawfell is an exceptionally presented cottage, ideal for exploring this stunning area, any time of year.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.

We were also really lucky with the weather which we weren't expecting at the end of November.

There were a few things that seemed slightly amiss - none enough to spoil the holiday, but which could easily be improved upon. The aga is wonderful, but like many people we are not used to one and therefore were left wondering what temperature setting to put it on, and when. We could find no instructions apart from a simple diagram which didn't mention these things. We were very surprised there was no hand soap in the house on arrival, which meant we spent the first 24 hours washing our hands with washing up liquid. There are three bathrooms in the house, plus the kitchen sink. Are guests really expected to pack four bars of soap? The loo paper supply felt stingy - just one per toilet. More would have been appreciated. Instructions about when to put the bins out could have been more prominent. Your reminder email about our departure from the house would have been more useful if it had contained specific information about the house, as your arrival email managed to do. There appeared to be mixed messages about where to put the key on departure. The key safe seems sensible, but there was something about posting it back through the door.
