About this property

This enchanting Grade II listed cottage is one of the very oldest in Ambleside, dating back to the 1580s and tucked away in a peaceful historic corner, with front and rear views to the surrounding fells. With a stylish and luxurious refurbishment, the original features shine; flagged slate with underfloor heating, old oak floors and beamed ceilings, a cosy bright lounge with window seat, traditional open fire and luxurious furnishings. A magnificent curved oak staircase takes you up to the romantic bedroom with brass bed, and Victorian-styled bathroom. Private parking at the rear, and pretty front garden. Old Oak Cottage is a true hideaway, perfectly formed for lazy mornings and cosy evenings in, but the delights of Ambleside’s pubs, restaurants and shops just a stroll away. Ambleside. a contemporary, characterful Lakeland village with a spectacular backdrop of Lake District fells. Ideal for walking, cycling or boating activities, its also a lovely spot for contemporary shops, leisurely lake cruises, acclaimed Lake District restaurants and cosy traditional pubs. There are 2 cinemas, a Jazz bar and the Lake Cruises leave regularly from Waterhead, a great way to explore without driving. The tiny 'Bridge House' is one of the most photographed places here, sat on a bridge in the middle of the village. Oh, and don’t forget our Roman fort, Galava. One of William Wordsworth's former family homes can be visited nearby at Rydal Mount & Gardens. His Grasmere home, Dove Cottage, is also worth a visit and only a short drive away on the scenic A591.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.

.we knew it was small and basic but sound keeps turning off .I can see this is longstanding issue as mentioned in reviews and not yet addressed Hot water an issue ..unable to have bath and only around 3 minutes worth of hot water in shower. Again this appears to be ongoing issue mentioned in reviews and not addressed again very disappointing when you’re. Old and wet having been outdoors Kitchen hot tap dodgy Would have considered revisiting however put off by these seemingly longstanding issues

Some of our concerns included: The toilet had not been adequately cleaned (A little effort with the toilet brush rectified this issue) Badly stained cushions on the two sitting room chairs. Black mould in the bath/shower. There was a very high level of thick dust underneath the chaise longue in the bedroom (noticed on the second day, when I dropped something) The cutlery and cutlery drawer needed to be cleaned before we could use them. The sound on the television regularly cut out and the television needed to be switched off for the sound to return. Some of the kitchen equipment, crockery and utensils could do with refreshing and replenishing. On a more positive note, the bed was very comfortable and we had a good sleep every single night. This is a lovely property but is sadly in need of some Tender Loving Care.

The central heating works well but the hot water supply is erratic. We could usually get a warm shower but to fill a hot bath the flow needed to be reduced to a minimum. The television sound was very poor. I would be happy to return to this cottage if the boiler and TV were upgraded
