About this property

Situated in the heart of Ambleside village, this traditional whitewashed character cottage has been lovingly restored retaining much of the original charm whilst adding everything you could need for a memorable stay. Tucked away near to the village's main street in the heart of Ambleside, the cosy cottage has a woodburning stove and window seats offering a tranquil retreat and a great place to sit and watch the village. Leave the car behind, and explore the nearby Stock Ghyll Falls, or the beautiful walk to Grasmere along the shores of Rydal Water. For a more challenging walk head up to Fairfield Horseshoe one of the classic Lake District Walks. Literary fans can easily visit Rydal Mount, the family home of William Wordsworth, or simply enjoy the eclectic selection of shops, restaurants, bars and cafes that Ambleside has to offer.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.

It's an older property, so I wouldn't expect perfection, but there's everything you need for a comfortable stay, and the price charged was reasonable. The bed was very comfortable and we managed to get some good sleep whilst there. The property is in an excellent location, and whilst there is no parking onsite, we always managed to get parked at the car park about a 5 minute walk away, which there is a free permit for too. The house is set over 3 levels. The kitchen is on the ground floor, as is a table and benches. The living room, second bedroom, and a WC is on the first floor. The master bedroom and shower room is on the second. As there are a lot of stairs for this property, I'd say it is not for the immobile or those who struggle with stairs. I'd have preferred a curtain at the shower room window, and a few more cups, but it was manageable.

I was worried about parking given there were 2 cars in the group but the owner provides multiple permits and the parking is only 3 - 5 mins walk away, and we did a quick unloading at the door that no one minded. Comfortable beds, cozy living room and a very well equipped kitchen. Only comment - tumble dryer turned itself off after 10 seconds when we tried to dry some towels. Checked water and filters, no clear reason why. There is a drying rack so no problem, just more so owner is aware.

Similar concerns to those raised in previous feedback responses, principally the middle bannister that has seemingly been ad-hoc repaired and is not safe for it purpose of supporting people using the stairs, especially if they fell. We are also disappointed that we raised issues during our stay (bannister, rooflight blind not working properly, and tumble dryer not working) to which we never received a response from the owner noting this information had been passed onto them via Lake Lovers. Overall, the accommodation was suitable for our stay, but we would not stay again until that bannister is properly fixed.
