Guests say

Fellside Cottage in Ambleside is praised for its brilliant location, cosy atmosphere, and well-equipped kitchen. Guests enjoy the garden views and proximity to local shops and restaurants. While some maintenance issues are noted, the cottage's charm and the area's walking opportunities are highlights.

Cleanliness receives mixed reviews, with several guests finding the cottage clean and cosy, while others note the presence of mould, dust, and a musty smell. The need for a deep clean and attention to mould in the bathroom is mentioned, affecting the overall impression.

The location is highly praised for its quiet setting, proximity to Ambleside, and easy access to local walks and fells. The steep walk from the town centre is noted, but it does not detract significantly from the overall positive feedback about the location.

Comfort is generally well-received, with guests appreciating the cosy living spaces, garden, and comfortable sofas. However, some guests mention issues with bed comfort, narrow beds, and inadequate pillows, which suggests room for improvement.

Facilities are deemed adequate with a well-stocked kitchen and good heating, but maintenance issues like a leaking tap, loose kitchen tap, and the need for a few additional kitchen items are highlighted. The small TV size is a recurring concern, and some guests suggest upgrades would enhance the experience.

There is insufficient information to score thoughtfulness accurately. While some guests mention a lack of welcome gifts, it is not a consistent theme across the reviews, and as such, it cannot be confirmed whether this is a standard practice or an occasional oversight.

About this property

This delightful semi-detached character cottage - over two hundred years old and built of Lakeland stone, is in an excellent, quiet location, on the outskirts of Ambleside. It is within easy distance of the village centre and offers many opportunities to enjoy fine walking in the surrounding hills without any need to use the car. The other half of the 'semi' is also used for holidays.

With a good choice of local restaurants, good pubs and cafes, Ambleside has everything for the visitor in any season. Whatever the reason for your stay, if you are looking for a comfortable base from which to explore the whole of the Lake District National Park we are sure Fellside Cottage will fit the bill.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.

This was the first time we have paid 4 figures for a cottage and have stayed in the Lakes for Xmas many years. The cottage location suited us, a brisk walk down and uphill to town was not a problem and being out of the main bustling town gave the bonus of parking spaces, one large at the rear and one small immediately at the front. Its a shame the cottage was not decorated for Xmas, which was a first. I understand the owners do not live local, but also learned they were there at the day of our stay. Little things detracted from the enjoyment of our stay. I guess when you pay a premium you expect good things. The Lake Lovers team were very helpful and credit to them in assisting most issues. The toilet flush stuck on and had a small leak (we were surprised the owners did not also notice this). The quilt in the main bedroom was a summer quilt and had to be changed. There was no heating in the kitchen and with the curtains open caused a cold draught in to lounge. We took a firestick for the upstairs TV, however ended up using this for downstairs as there is zero reception for digital channels (we never had an issue at a cottage nearby so guess an aerial upgrade is required). It is advertised as a Smart TV, however I did not want to spend an age entering all my personal passwords for the multiple media players, perhaps the owners should have left all their personal log in's for use? I genuinely cannot recall ever not being given a basket of logs and left bottle of something/packet of shortbread or equivalent at a Xmas rental, not obligatory I suppose. It is a shame as when things do not start off right, especially at Xmas, you just cannot wait to get home. Would we stay here again? Might do if it was cheap.

Definitely stay again. But can we have a cafetière please.

We've stayed locally before so knew the hill and the walk up The Struggle! Cottage was clean and warm, the log burner was lovely in the evening.
