Resting in the centre of Hawkshead is a charming, detached bungalow, Curlew Cottage. Located in a private cul-de-sac, Curlew Cottage offers a wonderful base for four guests, ideal for couples, families, and friends, looking to explore the delights of the Lake District National Park. The home has a host of features including a homely sitting room, two well-presented bedrooms, one with en suite facilities, a relaxing family bathroom and a well-equipped kitchen/diner to make some lovely meals. There are beautiful gardens at both the front and rear of the property meaning you can relax with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Keen walkers will be spoilt for choice with an abundance of trails and fells right on the doorstep, whilst for cyclists, the cottage is in close proximity to Grizedale Forest and of course Windermere and Coniston provide a great place for a little fun on the water. Hawkshead village itself has a fascinating literary history to investigate, perhaps while enjoying a drink in one of the excellent local pubs. It's famously associated with William Wordsworth who attended school in the village and Beatrix Potter where today the National Trust exhibits her original artwork in the old offices of Beatrix's husband William Heelis. Around the market square there is a delightful array of shops and cafes and with four pubs in the village there is a great choice of places to eat and drink. Curlew Cottage is the perfect base from which to discover all this and experience a memorable holiday.
The picturesque village of Hawkshead still retains the charm and character that so endeared it to its most famous residents - William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. Visitors can wander the wealth of tiny alleyways, thoroughfares, archways and courtyards between the whitewashed 17th century houses. There are many pleasant inns, teashops, guest houses and gift shops in the village, as well as the Beatrix Potter Gallery, which houses an annually changing exhibition of the famous author’s illustrations and stories. The other famous Hawkshead enthusiast, William Wordsworth, attended the Old Grammar School in 1779-87, which still stands today, and you can visit the building where the Lakeland poet developed his love of the form, and even see the desk into which he scratched his name as a small boy! Newby Bridge is ten miles away and offers attractions such as the Aquarium of the Lakes and Windermere Lake Cruises, sailing daily between Ambleside, Bowness and Lakeside. With stunning scenery and numerous attractions within easy touring distance, Hawkshead is in an ideal location at any time of the year.

Well equipped, comfortable and very clean. We didn't want to leave! Lots of birds in the garden, deer and owls calling at night - idyllic! Very accessible to the village centre - only a couple of minutes walk, yet quiet and peaceful. Would highly recommend.

Beautiful, quiet location just a couple of minutes walk to the centre of Hawkshead. Spotlessly clean, freshly decorated, comfortable beds and furniture, good central heating system and open fire. Nice walks from the doorstep. Really impressed. We rarely stay in the same property twice but we'll be making exceptions here.

The accommodation was well laid out, with plenty of space for our family of four and the dog. The cottage had a great amount of hooks, hanging space, and storage, especially for our walking gear. In particular, it was great that the hallway was big enough for everyone to remove coats and boots and dump bags without stress, and the boot tray and a long mat was really helpful. Games and books were available in the lounge, which was a nice touch. We weren't so lucky with the weather, but enjoyed the wood burner in the lounge which was easy to use. Both bedrooms had comfy beds, enough hangers in the wardrobe and drawer space for the week, mirror and stool, I even found a hair dryer! Big bathroom, great for a young family. I'm always happy to see laundry space, washing machine, tumble tryer - only used once, but all in working order. The kitchen was functional with everything we needed, including a dishwasher. Curlew Cottage is located very close to the centre of Hawkshead, with an easy 2 minutes stroll to the grocery store, coffee shops, ice cream, and pubs. All in all, a great little find for half term. We will be back!
