About this property

A short stroll from the shores of Coniston water, and a country pub, this traditional gamekeeper's cottage is full Lakeland character: stone-flagged floors, old oak beams, real fires and cottage windows -all wrapped up with tasteful decor and furnishings. Private parking for 2 cars outside the cottage, and further parking close by. Entrance porch with space for walking clobber. Dining room with local slate floor, pine furniture and working range/wood burning stove. Cosy separate living room with warming open fire, original beams and smart tv. The modern fitted kitchen looks out onto National Trust land. Upstairs to 2 pretty bedrooms, 1 double and 1 twin, both with fell views. The bathroom overlooks Coniston water and features a roll top bath. Outside, you'll find a private enclosed garden with stunning fell views, patio area for dining and a secure bike store with racks for four bikes. A Coniston holiday cottage takes you slightly away from the hustle and bustle of Bowness and Lake Windermere, to a wilder landscape full of adventure.

Coniston Water takes you to a quieter area, still with a busy village, but more about walking and being on the water. It featured in Arthur Ransome's Swallows and Amazons, and was of course where Donald Campbell met his untimely end during his water speed record attempt in 'Bluebird'.

If you’re looking for breathtaking surroundings; dramatic fells including Coniston Old Man, wild woodlands and wonderful Lake District walks, Coniston is a great place to be. The village centre is well equipped for stocking up the kitchen with traditional butcher and supermarket, lovely tea rooms, cafes and traditional Lakeland pubs - the Black Bull Inn is well worth a visit for its award-winning brewery the Coniston Brewing Co.

For a cultured day out, head to Brantwood historic house - an impressive residence overlooking the lake, once home to John Ruskin, where you’ll find a range of events such as talks, concerts, craft workshops and even outdoor theatre, as well as lovely grounds to wander in.

Nestling at the head of Coniston Water, the pretty village of Coniston is surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in the Lake District National Park, making it a superb base for touring, with Hawkshead, Ambleside, Windermere and Grasmere just a short drive away. Superb walking, mountain biking and climbing are available locally on Coniston Old Man and Wetherlam, and the lovely woodland trails at Grizedale Forest. For watersports enthusiasts, the quiet lake is ideal for dinghy sailing and canoeing, whilst the less active can enjoy a leisure cruise on the beautiful steam yacht 'Gondola’, or visit Brantwood, the former home of John Ruskin. Nearby attractions include the award-winning village of Hawkshead, home of the Beatrix Potter Gallery, Tarn Hows, one of the most visited beauty spots in the country and Esthwaite Water, famous for its fishing. A first class holiday location at any time of the year.

Good location for local walks from the cottage (did Coniston Old Man range and Tarn Hows car-free), plus short walk to The Ship and 15 min walk to Coniston Village. Well equipped for self-catering. Recommended for a quiet relaxing stay.

However I think there should have been a warning that this cottage might not be ideal for an older person and it certainly wouldn’t be if you had any mobility issues. The stairs are steep, the bath with shower over unusually high and the parking most inconvenient. It was impossible to park the car next to the cottage, even to unload, due to the regular traffic past the cottage and down to the camp site. Slotting the car behind the cattle grid we could manage but having to carry the luggage right round while avoiding the sheep droppings and the passing cars was not fun. Nor was having to access the car in the dark. There was also a strong and very unpleasant smell (possibly some sort of disinfectant) in the porch which persisted all week despite keeping the door open. It took us a couple of days to rid the cottage itself of the smell. I hesitated to write such a negative review since we have stayed in many Sykes cottages over the years and been very happy. However this was a disappointment.

Loved the garden and wish we had been able to sit in it more often. Had a lovely log fire each evening. Just a quick point which has been highlighted by others , is the tiny step into the lounge, it can catch you out with numerous stubbed toes if you aren't a person who wears slippers
