We stayed at Birch cottage for 2 weeks and had a great time. The cottage is perfectly placed for walking into Whinlatter area and onto Grisdale, Hopegill Head etc.The view up onto Skiddaw from the cottage is great, watching the changing weather is all part of staying in the lakes. We watched red squirrels in the village and also in the forest behind. Many of the forest tracks are easy walking and allow you to gain height and views quickly without having to be super fit.The cottage is warm, well equipped and dog friendly which is great. The most important points are that the bed and settee are comfortable, we really enjoyed our stay.Local recommendations The Pheasent, Crossthwaite Road, Keswick does great food, we had to book, it was very busy at the weekend.Booths Keswick does a wonderful cooked breakfast, but look out for the full breakfast, it is huge. The Cottage in the Woods does great fine dining but if your budget doesn\'t go that far try Middle Ruddings in Braithwaite which does excellent food and has great real ales. And best of all the coffee and cake at the Whinlatter visitors centre is great, the local birds all come down to feed at the cafe and its an easy walk (40 Mins) from the cottage.

Myself, my husband, our 10 year old daughter and our two dogs enjoyed a great, comfortable stay in Birch Cottage. It has everything you could ever need, the kitchen is well equipped, there are board games/cards/DVD\'s/books available. The beds and sofa were comfortable, the stunning surrounding views, its very quiet and tranquil! Lots of birds in the lovely gated garden! We had great weather and visited lots of the lakes and different area\'s- this cottage was a fantastic base! The only criticism I have is that the garden is shared, there were guests in the other two cottages and the garden isn\'t really big enough.... oh and if another dog takes a dislike to yours, you cant let them out at the same time!
