About this property

Windrush is a homely three bedroomed semi-detached cottage, located in a quiet cul de sac in the pretty little village of Portinscale, just a few minutes walk from the shores of Derwentwater and a mile from the market town of Keswick. Its is elevated giving it everchanging views across the valley depending on the time of year.

The scenery of the north western Lake District is just beautiful and Buttermere Valley is only a short drive away. There are numerous walks from the door the lake on your doorstep.

To the front of the cottage there is a pretty garden and a driveway with parking for two cars. On opening the front door you’ll find a bright sitting room with great view and this follows through to the dining area. Relax here in front of the open fire or indeed enjoy a meal with the family.

The shaker style fitted kitchen has everything you need and this leads to the conservatory, a lovely place to sit and relax with a good book or the weekend papers.

Take the stairs to the first landing, which offers stunning views of Skiddaw. Choose from three bedrooms. To the front is the master bedroom with king size and enjoys the beautiful. The second can be presented either as a super king or twin bed and the third is a double.

Steep steps climb the garden to a raised decked viewing platform and summer house which is a lovely retreat on a summer’s afternoon, the garden is enclosed and 'dog proof'.

To the side of the property the garage is available for the secure storage of mountain bikes and the washing machine and additional fridge freezer.

Overall the property was comfortable and well equipped with good off-road parking and walks from the door. We did notice a rather off-putting smell in the kitchen, particularly when the door had been closed. We couldn't work out where it was coming from so resorted to leaving the kitchen window open when we were in and closing the internal door. The conservatory doesn't have any ventilation (window locked and no key), there is an area of damp and the cushions on the furniture were going mouldy. The towels also smelled like they had been put away damp, but they were clean and the beds were very comfortable. The left hand side of the toaster was broken and some areas of the house needed more of a deep clean, eg, the blind in the shower room is quite grubby and the toilet brush in the loo is rusting around the top. The information folder referred to instructions for the bins being located in the kitchen which we couldn't find. Overall we did enjoy our stay and would probably return due to the excellent location.

We will be booking again for 2024 once we know dates. The property feels like our home and we are comfortable while staying there. The property is well maintained and a pure delight to rest and enjoy. The only matter which needs to be looked at is lighting for outside. This is a real health and safety issues especially in winter when there is snow and ice.

My only criticism would be the shower (and I'm being picky!). But its quite a step to get into and out of the bath and less mobile people may struggle a little. Everything else was great!
