... 2 miles from North Bovey in a lovely setting is Bovey Castle, built in 1907 as a country seat for the heir to the WH Smith empire and now a renowned hotel. Carefully hidden in the grounds are 22 private, granite-built lodges of which we offer 12. These smart, stylish, comfy properties overlook the Edwardian gardens, lake and tennis courts; parking is a 5 minute walk from the lodges (unloading/loading closer). All the hotel facilities are yours to enjoy, including indoor heated swimming pool (65’ x 19'6" x 4'6" deep; no children before 9.30am or after 5.30pm), gym, steam room, sauna, spa (beauty treatments) and restaurants. Outside are hard and grass tennis courts (lessons available), croquet lawn (seasonal) and children's climbing frame, slide and swings.
Supervised playroom for children under 8 (extra, available school holidays and half-terms) with arts and crafts, egg collecting and ferrets. Eight to 14 year olds can join the Bovey Rangers(school holidays only, extra) and enjoy activities ranging from rock climbing to survival skills. Optional activities for adults include archery, rifle shooting, fly fishing, falconry (daily display), riding, clay pigeon shooting and cider and sloe gin making. Mountain bikes for hire. Wrapped around the hotel and lodges is a championship 18 hole golf course with driving range and pro shop; complimentary round (subject to availability, non-transferable) for all guests over 16. If you’d rather something a little quieter, roam the 400 acre estate (wellies provided). If you don’t feel like cooking, order a restaurant meal or pizza to be delivered to your lodge or book a table at the hotel’s restaurant or brasserie. The friendly hotel staff will help you arrange any activities you wish. Restricted use of hotel and children's facilities from 24 to 27 December and 31 December to 1 January (pool, spa and golf still available). Use of hotel facilities may also occasionally be restricted at other times. An exceptional place to stay. Wedding licence. Maid service available (extra). Spring water. Arrival after 4pm. Claret Tor is in the upper row of lodges (next to A231). Porch into first-floor kitchen (dishwasher,microwave, freezer, larder fridge, electric cooker) with French windows to balcony deck (table/chairs); living room with ‘living flame’ gas fire, TV/DVD and views over the gardens. Small cloakroom and separate loo. Open tread stairs down to two double bedrooms, one with en suite bathroom (suite, shower over bath) and the other with en suite shower-room (suite). Open tread wood stairs from the living room up to another double bedroom with en suite bathroom (suite, shower over bath). Utility room (washer-drier).

"We absolutely loved our week at Bovey Castle, the lodge was beautifully positioned in the huge grounds and there was always a quiet place. The golf course is beautifully kept, there are plentiful local walks and it's a great place for the family and dogs!! We really felt it was the best of both worlds having the hotel facilities on hand with your own private space. The Brasserie is great, pool area lovely, spa very good, falconry display is unmissable. The bar staff are great, happy to go through the choices and in fact all the staff are friendly, warm and uber helpful. We cannot wait to go back, and try some of the other lodges. The perfect family holiday."

"This was our first visit to Bovey Castle and we thoroughly enjoyed the comforts of the lodge, as well as the setting and the grounds and facilities of the hotel. The castle's close proximity to Chagford and MoretonHampstead provides numerous options for alternative dining. This really is the best of both worlds; the independence of quality self catering with the use of excellent facilities and the ambience of a top hotel. We found the hotel's staff to be extremely helpful and friendly. The layout of Claret Tor worked really well for our party, including two Golden Retrievers who could be easily contained on hard flooring in the main living area, where access was very easy. The lodge is ideally located with a short walk to both the castle and the lodge car park."
