About this property

Ravenstonedale 4.5 miles. A lovely, stone-built, semi-detached cottage, beautifully situated on a hillside overlooking the Rawthey Valley and Wild Boar Fell. An ideal couples romantic retreat, this semi-detached farm building conversion is in a lovely, secluded area near Ravenstonedale and provides a chance to escape from it all and enjoy a getaway to this scenic area. A real home-from-home, this cottage provides a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy a relaxing holiday in a picturesque area. A spacious and well-equipped granite worktop kitchen with both Aga and electric cookers includes a traditional farmhouse table at which to enjoy delicious home cooked meals in the traditional country style. A dishwasher makes the clean-up easy. After dinner you can retire to the warm and cosy sitting room with logburner fire to watch TV, browse the internet or play board games and chat. Two bedrooms include a larger bedroom with a velux window affording splendid views of the surrounding fells and night sky. A magnificent king size mahogany four poster bed oozes olde-worlde romantic charm and is complimented by a traditional mahogany mirrored dressing table and wardrobe set. The enclosed rear garden offers beautiful views of the Rawthey Valley with a table to dine outdoors situated on a totally private stone patio and an additional super-sized bench seat on which to sit and take in the view over the valley. Enjoy an unpolluted night sky full of stars on clear nights whilst listening to tawney owls talking to each other. A wealth of wildlife is commonly seen from hares and red squirrel to abundant birdlife and bats. It is not uncommon to see a buzzard soaring overhead or a pheasant pecking around outside looking for food. More rarely the magnificent heron can be seen wading in the nearby beck. In springtime hear the haunting sound of the curlew calling while flying overhead. This cottage is a walkers delight with access to a hundred square miles of open fell, nearby footpaths will lead you to stunning, hidden waterfalls and tiny becks, while across the valley is an amazing limestone pavement to discover. Fabulous walks in the Howgills or Wild Boar Fell and others can be made from the door. If it rains then the Aga is always there on your return to dry things out. Situated within the newly extended Yorkshire Dales National Park, this is a superb base from which to explore the area. Note: This cottage can be booked with Ref 10542, together they sleep 9.

A small and compact village, Ravenstonedale has much to offer the visitor seeking a quieter experience than the nearby Lake District National Park provides. It is a pretty village; traditional whitewashed stone cottages and stone walls border the fields, whilst the Raven brook trickles by. St Oswald's church is largely from the Georgian era, comprising a solid structure with a simple square tower. In addition, there are elements from older buildings incorporated in it, and the base of a Saxon cross just outside. To the north of the church, excavations in 1920 revealed the foundations of a 13th Century Gilbertine Abbey. Ravenstonedale is a fantastic base for exploring the Lakes to the west or the Yorkshire Dales, just a short drive to the east. Those who prefer to stay closer to home can explore the Howgill Fells, the rounded hills which signal the start of the Lakeland ranges.

The area was very good for walks and it was nice and isolated which we prefer. Great views from the cottage also. Will return.

!!! The views are incredible . A real home from home. Extremely well equipped and beautiful little gifts. Received a phone call checking that everything was ok which was a lovely gesture. The only reason why I took a star off the comfort was the bed, for someone else this may be perfect but for us unfortunately wasn’t but wouldn’t deter us from staying again. For me when you can see cows and sheep right outside the cottage even from the bathroom window , well it just doesn’t get any better and the abundance of birds was just incredible. We managed to take advantage of the furniture in the beautiful dry stone walled garden. Would definitely recommend this cottage to anyone.

The cottage is well organised and looked after by the thoughtful and generous caretakers. We enjoyed time spent cloud watching in the garden with a cup of coffee and feeding the birds with the thoughtfully provided food. There is plenty to keep any visitor entertained in the local area: the waffle cones from the ice cream shop just down from the car park in Sedbergh are to be recommended as is a visit to the cheese shop at Wensleydale Creamery if passing through Hawes. Lots of walking from the front door or a little further afield. We thoroughly enjoyed our week & both wished we had booked for a fortnight.
