We spent five very relaxing nights in Barn End and plan to go back for another visit. It is a very comfortable and attractive cottage, maintained to a very high standard. It is roomy, bright and warm. There was a biting wind and some heavy rain when we were there and it was lovely to come in to its cosiness. The kitchen is well stocked with equipment and the nearby farm shop is well worth a visit for tasty treats to cook. The location is perfect for access to Carlisle, Hadrian's Wall, Talkin Tarn, Lanercost and other points of interest in the area.

Me and my girlfriend stayed in Barn End Cottage in early February 2014! We are a young couple (23&24) and were looking for somewhere for a relaxed week away. We arrived on the Monday afternoon and were very impressed by the place. The pictures didn't really do it the justice it deserved. There were a couple of minor issues; there were a couple of lights that didn't work in the bedroom and there was no freezer for the food we had brought with us but apart from that everything was great. We cooked every night in the more than adequate kitchen area and the lounge area was bright and very homely. The sofa pulls out into a bed which we used before going to bed due to the lack of tv in the bedroom. The bathroom was clean and the shower was hot, easy to use and powerful ( don't run the tap I the kitchen when somebody else is in the shower!!) We didn't see the owner all week which was not a bad thing I suppose, we were left to do as we pleased and we didn't need her for anything. I'm sure she would have been available if we needed her for anything. The area is really nice, you can see the river out of the window, it's literally at the end of the garden. We went for a few walks into the village and to the next village, down the river and also went for a run a bit further on the walking routes. The village literally has a pub, that's it. The pub is a 2 minute walk away and when we went in was very welcoming and the food looked very nice even though we didn't eat. Carlisle is 4 miles away and Gretna is 10 minutes away where there is a designer outlet. We didn't go to Hadrians wall but there are signs saying it is only a couple of miles away. If you want a cozy place in a nice little village with no hassle, places to walk within a short driving distance to a busier town then I would recommend this place. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and will be looking at coming again if we are looking for a short break away for some peace and quiet.

I really don't know where to start. From the moment we arrived at Barn End, we were blown away. We turned down the lane in a lovely little village and the lovely Barn End appeared in front of us. Opening the door we climbed the stairs and then the wow factor kicked in. Sumptuous wooden floors under our feet, we walked into the main living area. Exposed oak beams above us were to die for. The amount of money the owner must have spent fitting this cottage out shows everywhere. A fully equipped kitchen, with dishwasher and washing machine. An incredibly comfortable couch to relax on at the end of the day. A large HD TV with full Sky package, yes movies and sports, for you to enjoy. A leather recliner with foot stool, OMG! French doors opening out to a view of the River Eden with unspoiled views of the countryside beyond. The bedroom was similarly lovely, matching classic furniture all round with a nice comfy bed too. The bathroom is high spec as well, with a very good shower for soothing your weary body at the end of a long day. We stayed for five nights and we had something to do every day. Just four miles to Carlisle, really close to Hadrian's Wall, Hexham is very nice and it's not much further from there to get to Newcastle. The Stag Inn is only 200 yards away and I heartily recommend a meal there. All freshly prepared food from local suppliers with friendly staff. I really could go on, but the best thing to do is go for yourself. You won't regret it.
