    About this property

Ropewalk is a traditional cottage built from Cotswold stone and found at the heart of the charming and historic village of Blockley. A stay here means you’ll be enjoying areas of outstanding natural beauty that are perfect for hikers, foodies and those just looking to get away from it all! It’s the ideal base from which to explore and enjoy the tranquility, stunning scenery and market towns of the Cotswolds with fantastic walks that start right at the cottage’s front door.

Ropewalk Cottage itself dates back to the 1880s, when it was occupied by silk mill workers during the heyday of Blockley’s textile industry. Recently renovated, this idyllic rural retreat comes complete with a wood-burning stove for whiling away your evenings in front of the fire with glass of wine in hand. The cottage sleeps up to 8 guests (with a maximum of 6 adults and 2 young children) in two doubles, one twin and a kid’s bedroom. The cottage also recently received an Oliver’s Travels recommendation award!
The Horse and Groom, The Good Pub Guide's pub of the year for 2016 is just 2 miles from the cottage.

The village of Blockley, found in the hills of the North Cotswolds between Chipping Campden and Moreton-in-Marsh, is a true gem of an English village. It’s been designated as both an area of outstanding natural beauty and a conservation area, so you’ll be surrounded by idyllic countryside no matter the time of year. You’ll be invited to enjoy some warm and generous local hospitality thanks to the village’s thriving and friendly community, and Blockley's picturesque village green provides a peaceful rest stop and entertainment thanks to the bowling green and well-kept children’s area.

    A brief history of Blockley
Blockley is locally renowned for its contributions to the textile industry, at one point boasting an impressive 12 water mills along its two brooks. In the 18th and 19th centuries, these historic buildings were repurposed from silk production to a broad range of rural uses including flour milling, flax weaving, woodcutting, threshing and (to provide refreshment at the end of a long day!) cider pressing.

The village church of St Peter and St Paul has a venerable past too, dating back to 1180AD. Leaping forward to the 20th Century, Paxton House (which stands near the old Post Office) acted as the Headquarters of the American Super Six division in 1942, and military history buffs will be delighted and fascinated by the fact that General George S Patton and Eisenhower met here to organize the Normandy landings!

    Local amenities
Blockley’s village shop sells a range of handy groceries, newspapers, locally produced meat, fruit and  vegetables, bread, pastries as well hot food, drinks and snacks thanks to the attached cafe. The shop also offers a Post Office service on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, including a Bureau du Change.
There’s a great selection of places to eat and drink in the village - The Great Western Arms, The 18th century Crown Hotel and the Lower Brook Guest House all come highly recommended by visitors and locals alike.

Twice a year (usually in Spring and at the start of June) a number of gardens in the village are opened up to the public, an event well worth exploring if you’re lucky enough to be in the village at the time. The gardens at Mill Dene are open from April to October and offer high tea in the afternoons.

    Surrounding area
Ropewalk Cottage is only 3 miles away from Moreton-in-Marsh, which can be reached from London Paddington by train in roughly 90 minutes. Also nearby are the towns of Stow-on-the-Wold, Chipping Campden, the spa town Cheltenham (well known for its links to horse racing) Shakespeare’s birthplace Stratford-on-Avon, Oxford and an enchanting selection of National Trust properties including Hidcote Manor, Snowshill Manor and Chastleton House.

Longborough Opera is popular in the Summer and makes for a local cultural highlight, and there’s plenty of lovely Cotswold villages nearby to explore, with Bourton-on-the-Water, Broadway and The Slaughters offering great shops, traditional pubs and fine restaurants. Also within easy reach of the cottage you’ll find Sudeley Castle, Blenheim Palace, Batsford Arboretum, Sezincote House, Warwick Castle and much, much more.

    Pubs & Restaurants
Blockley benefits from having a great range of places to eat and drink, offering great craft beers and traditional meals created using the finest locally-sourced ingredients.

The Great Western Arms in Blockley, which has a welcoming and friendly atmosphere and serves typical pub food. On the High Street, The Crown in Blockley is the place to go if you feel like sitting back and just watching the world go by, while Lower Brook House offers restaurant-style food if you feel like a special night out. It’s highly recommended you book first though!

If you enjoy long country walks, turn right out of the cottage and take the trip to Broad Campden where you’ll find the The Bakers Arms, good traditional pub serving a fine range of food and beers. Roughly two miles in the other direction is Bourton-on-the-Hill, where The Horse and Groom is regularly recommended by guests to the cottage thanks to its wonderful garden that’s perfect for sunny lunches.

Other good pubs in the area include The Ebrington Arms in Ebrington and The Red Lion and The King’s Arms, which can both be found in Chipping Campden. Slightly further afield in Stow-on-the-Wold, The Queen's Head is a traditional pub with excellent Donnington beer and is well worth a visit. Here you’ll also find The Eagle and Child, which is part of The Royalist Hotel and is one of England’s oldest pubs – and it’s not surprising it’s lasted so long considering the quality of the food on offer there!

"We loved this cottage in sleepy Blockley, surrounded by rolling hills. Everything you needed was in it, and the owner, Stephanie, was very helpfull with any questions we had. The cottage is situated in great hiking area, and in no time you are in other lovely Cotswolds villages. We hope to return to it many times!"

"Lovely quaint cottage in a beautiful village surrounded by colourful (we went in November) countryside. An ideal place to catch up with friends. Stephanie responded quickly to queries and was very helpful with suggestions of places to eat. Stairs in the cottage might be a bit challenging if you aren't very mobile. We have had a great weekend."

"I definitely recommend this cottage. The village is very pretty. The house was comfortable and with all mod cons but with a good character. We had a fire going in the main room and felt cosy."

"Five stars to both Oliver's and the property. Oliver's helped my three hiking colleagues and myself book a well suited cottage in the Cotswolds. Working with Oliver's was easy, efficient and friendly throughout, and the property we rented was entirely in keeping with what we had hoped for. The cottage offered great accommodation, in a very pretty village, at a very competitive price. I would recommend Oliver's and their cottage properties to anyone."

"A very comfortable cottage, well maintained, in a beautiful village, that met all our needs. Also, the booking experience was prompt and courteous."

"No need to contact the owner because everything went perfectly, from arrival to departure. The cottage was just as we had hoped it would be and the Champagne and fruitcake to greet us very thoughtful extras. Loved the village shop and cafe and thoroughly enjoyed our week in the Cotswolds."

"Everything was perfect from start to finish – we were a group of 6 adults and 3 babies and the cottage was perfect for our group. Steph was very helpful giving us all the tips of the area (including best pubs, walks, etc) so we were out and about during the day visiting the most charming local villages just a few minutes away (amazing location – Blockley itself is gorgeous!), but it was lovely arriving in the afternoon to relax and have dinner in the cozy common areas (including fire log!) which had a great atmosphere. Bathrooms were a plus as well as they were recently refurbished, and the terrace was really nice – unfortunately weather wasn’t good enough for a BBQ, so will have to come back!"

"I searched far and wide to find the perfect place to celebrate my wife's fortieth and I'm so pleased that I chose Ropewalk Cottage. It was a gem surrounded by the beautiful crown of the Cotswolds. The owners have taken great care to provide all you could need inside the cottage: from the Nespresso machine to the lovely decoration of the bedrooms and bathrooms, there was no detail overlooked. As a the centre of the holiday celebrations, we were also able to welcome friends and family to stay. Everybody who walked into the door was wowed by the luxury and felt, as we did, perfectly at home. Stephanie and Oliver - the owners - took great care of all of our needs whilst we stayed. They provided a bottle of champagne to start the holiday, which was a wonderful way to begin. From there the cottage was a base for us to explore lots of the beautiful villages that are the essence of the Cotswolds and were so wonderfully charming. I strongly recommend Ropewalk Cottage and have every intention of returning."

"Stayed at Ropewalk Cottage in Blockley for a long late August bank holiday weekend. We were a party of 7 plus a small dog and the cottage was very comfortable and clean. Blockley is a beautiful village in a valley in the North of Cotswolds and there is plenty to see and do in the area. The beds were comfortable and the bathrooms were clean and new - for me, the two most improtant things when staying away from home! Would certainly recommend for walkers, families and those that want peace and quiet in a beautiful part of the world."

"Just wanted to say what a great weekend we had in your lovely cottage. It was perfect for a break with friends - really well equipped and lovely decor. We had a delicious meal at the Bakers Arms on the Sat evening too. Thank you again"

"Just a quick note to say how much we all enjoyed our stay at Ropewalk Cottage. The views were wonderful and we managed some great walks nearby on the Heart of England way (although we didn't look quite as professional as most!). The rooms were extremely comfortable, very clean and the house well equipped. Perfect size for our extended family. We loved the nespresso machine and the dishwasher:-)) The one thing we felt was missing was a broom - (as my sisters kids left a lot of toast crumbs!). and we weren't sure about how to recycle plastics? Otherwise it was great! I'm sure the garden and BBQ will get more use in the summer - but I enjoyed one sunny morning having breakfast there until the clouds re-appeared. We managed to find some local NT properties - Snowshill Manor is just up the road about 4 miles away and is completely unique - well worth a visit, and especially if you like Samurai armour! Broadway Tower was also great - the views reminded me of Tara..and a very nice lunch to be had in the coffee shop there too. We managed to get over to Burford where my sister and family had a fab day out at the zoo - highly recommended and kept the kids happy. Personally, I was happy perusing the shops and drinking coffee and eating cake in Huffkins:-)"

"We loved the cottage and were lucky enough to enjoy breakfast outside in the garden in the sunshine too. The owners were extremely kind and helpful too. There was a slight delay with cleaning as it took longer than expected on the day we arrived (the usual cleaner contracted meningitis so clearly not anyone's fault!) but they sent us a bottle of champagne to apologise. We had a brilliant time and hope to return again soon. (We'll expect the same fabulous weather, of course.)"

"The Ropewalk Cottage is a lovely place for a retreat. The house itself is tastefully decorated and has two bath rooms and four bedrooms meaning it was perfect for our New Year break with 6 adults and two small children. There is a fantastic wood-burning stove in the living room, making it really cosy and a large table which was perfect for our dinner parties. The kitchen is well kitted out with lots of pots an pans and modern equipment including a great fan oven and a dishwasher. The village is also in a great location - we had lots of good walks and pubs in the stunning Cotswolds countryside. Nearby is the picturesque market town of Chipping Camden, which has plenty of restaurants and historic sights and is well worth a visit."
    Laura D
"Have just returned from three nights staying at Ropewalk Cottage and wanted to say thank you for a lovely stay. The cottage was in a really peaceful location just a minutes walk from the centre of the village. The cottage itself is really cosy, especially the living area with comfy sofas and a log burning fire. There was enough seating space for 6 adults in the living area and around the dining table. The beds were also really comfy and I slept very well! We ate at the local pub for lunch one day which did good pub food and had a log fire which was nice to sit in front of and read the papers. We also went in to Chipping Camden which has lots of lovely shops and cafes and from there we walked some of the Cotswalds Way. Overall a really relaxing stay and we hope to return soon to this beautiful part of the world."
    Chris S
"We spent three amazing days in Ropewalk Cottage - Blockley is lovely with beautiful countryside and villages in walking distance. The cottage is great - real charm and everything you need for a long weekend or more. Would love to go back soon."
