During its heyday, Northleach was a significant market town and a key hub for the Cotswold wool trade, known across Europe. Stone from the town's quarry and what is now Market Square was used to construct the wealthy wool merchants' church of St. Peter and St. Paul in the fifteenth century. More recently, the village has appeared in several movies, notably the 2015 drama Casual Vacancy.
