About this property

A beautifully converted granary overlooking a Japanese-style garden, just a short walk from the National Trust’s oldest nature reserve at Wicken Feṇ. If you are looking for an unusual place to stay, this unique and quirky barn conversion of The Barn at Butts Farm could be for you. This former granary has been converted into a beautiful, stylish cottage with many original features. The spacious beamed living room has windows on three sides, allowing the light to flood in. With its vaulted beamed ceiling, oak floor, and log-burning stove in a large stone fireplace, it is a warm and welcoming room. Equipped with a large, comfortable sofa and chairs, it’s a delightful place for friends and family to relax at the end of the day. The fully fitted kitchen has oak work tops, Belfast sink and plate rack. The twin bedroom is in the attic and has exposed brickwork and sloping ceilings. The quirky layout of the barn means you access the double bedroom and en-suite shower room via an external entrance, enhancing the charm of this unique cottage. The delightful, tranquil bedroom has a vaulted ceiling, oak floor, New England colonial bed and Japanese hot tub. The room also has French doors overlooking a small patio garden equipped with rattan table and chairs. The village of Wicken is a charming base for your holiday with a village pond and green just opposite the barn conversion, as well as the nearby Maids Head pub and Wicken Fen Nature Reserve where you may spot rare species along the board-walks. Cycle hire is also available at Wicken Fen, so you can tour the scenic routes of Sustrans Route 11 all the way through to King’s Lynn. The village is honeycombed with ancient waterways and the River Cam runs through the area. Visit Ely Cathedral a little further afield; the city is also home to The Stained-Glass Museum, Oliver Cromwell's House and a Saturday market. Newmarket is also nearby, a quaint market town hosting the National Horse Racing Museum. Or why not explore the picture-perfect streets of Cambridge where you'll find plenty of museums, independent cafés and Cambridge University Botanic Garden.

Wicken is a charming rural village resting between Ely and Cambridge. The village enjoys a picturesque location, with the River Cam running through the surrounding area, whilst Wicken itself offers guests the marvellous Lapwing Cafe, views of the Wicken Corn Windmill and access to the wonderful Wicken Fen Nature Reserve. Those after a hearty meal with crisp ale can pay The Maids Head a visit, before embarking on a hike along one of the several nearby trails.

Upon arrival we contacted the owner as stated on the Sykes email. She answered very rudely and informed us that as we hadn't contacted her previously she had assumed we were not coming and that we were lucky she was there as she had been going to go away. She showed us around very briefly and told us that our dog had to be kept on a lead at all times, we knew this but had assumed it was because there was water in the garden, however she told us that she had 2 cats who were very territorial and could attack our dog! The accommodation itself was lovely everything was of a high standard. Although the shower area is looking a bit tired could do with a bit of an refresh. We felt it was a bit of an inconvenience having to walk outside to go to the bedroom and shower part of the barn. Maybe some sort of cover over the walkway could be looked at or a connection through? The Japanese bath in the bedroom obviously hadn't been cleaned as there were black bits of mould floating in the bottom we decided not to use it. Around the edge of this bath is a gully full of dust and cobwebs which again is not good if you have a dog as ours slipped down it at one point. On our first day we went to have a shower it wasn't working. I informed the owner who said she would get a plumber in. When we arrived back late afternoon it still wasn't working, again I went to see the owner who informed me that her plumber was on holiday and possibly someone could come in the next day. She offered me use of hers not ideal as it would take an hour for it to heat. Eventually a plumber arrived that night at 7 and fixed it temporarily. This is a very nice place but is definitely way overpriced. We felt like we paid for a premium property and this wasn't . We have stayed in many holiday homes for half this price which have been well worth the money. It should never be advertised as pet friendly. The garden is beautiful but if you want to sit out there and let your dog walk about it isn't an option. We felt there was very little privacy as the owner is literally in the same grounds and was quite happy to walk into our accommodation without knocking. I feel that Sykes need to look into the properties and their owners before advertising.
