The interior of the property was immaculately clean and the bed linen and towels were also great. The kitchen had ample cutlery, plates, cups etc and it was great having the dishwasher and washing machine too, although we didn’t need to use the washing machine. We eventually found the Wi-Fi router to gain the Wi-Fi password - it’s worth noting that the router is located behind the settee - you have to pull it out to find it. The hot tub was fantastic and was our children’s favourite part of Squirrel Lodge. The electric heaters made the property lovely and warm when required - as did the heated towel rail in the bathroom. There were however a couple of things that could have made the property even better : It needs either a clothes maiden or a washing line, as there is nowhere really to hang towels or clothes to dry. The double bed mattress seems damaged/broken in the middle. There is quite a severe dip in it so if there are two people in it, you are literally rolling into the middle from each side. The bar stools are too high for the breakfast bar, so it’s difficult to sit comfortably at it. My ten year old had to stand up to eat his cereal so i I think the adjustable height stools would work better. The outside decking area is really tired and shabby looking and does need some TLC. At the rear of the property, sone of the wooden railing is damaged and so didn’t really feel safe. Our children are older so it wasn’t a problem for us, but a younger child could hurt themselves if they jumped/leant on it. Finally, a couple of coat hooks somewhere would be great to hang up jackets! None of the above affected our stay at all, they’re just small improvements which would make the property even better. The grounds around Squirrel Lodge were a bit of a let down. The whole place, despite having nice trees and a couple of paths to walk along, had a very lost and abandoned feel to it. No ground maintenance had been done for a long time by the looks of it and behind Squirrel lodge itself, there is a rotten, dilapidated shed/lodge with all the windows broken and huge shards of glass still sticking out at various angles. Closer inspection showed that there were also huge pieces of broken glass hidden in the grass underneath the windows. Young children or dogs playing around this area could end up severely injured and I do feel that someone needs to raise this urgently and either repair the damaged building or tear it down altogether. It was also disappointing that the small bar/cafe was closed. We were told it wouldn’t open until Thursday (we were only staying Monday to Thursday morning.) So it’s worth noting that there are no facilities really in the site at all. You need a car certainly! As I said, we had a great holiday using Squirrel Lodge as our base, heading out for days out , then chilling with the hot tub and Netflix in the evenings

One of the upstairs beds has collapsed causing a significant dip on one side of the mattress. The mattress protectors have perished and need replacing. The quilts are dirty. The patio area needs some general cleaning and maintenance. The hot tub motor makes a terrible noise and on occasion stops working altogether so needs repairing. The lock on the door sticks and is very difficult to open Sykes you should remove this property until it has had some general maintenance, repairs and cleaning done

Outside decking area is a mess and compares very unfavourably with all the other lodges onsite. External gate bolt does not fit unless one spends ages trying to align it. Duvets are disgusting and need replacing. Lock on entrance door needs a special technique to open which should be shown on arrival. Checks should be carried out beforehand to ensure all is as it should be - for example, in our case, there was a loose electrical wire hanging from the ceiling and one of the stools had tape hanging from it, all in the entrance area. There was no Visitors Book available despite the instruction from the Information Folder saying so. Kitchen is modern with decent units but some of the cutlery did not look particularly hygienic. There are some positives - bathroom mirror is modern, shower is fine with good pressure, oven is good as is the tv, with Netflix. We didn't use it but the hot tub looks very inviting. Surrounding area is a treat, delightful woods, lots of good walking, a pond with ducks & swans, and an excellent restaurant 1 minute from the lodge. It really would not take very long to get this accommodation right, it just needs a special touch.
