About this property

Situated in the quiet village of Betis, Casa Cueva Mediana enjoys a rural setting surrounded by a wild agrarian landscape and enclosed by leafy trees and plants, making it feel entirely secluded. It is an idyllic spot to enjoy a relaxing break whilst still being less than 10 minutes from Tarifa's picturesque coastline.

Forming part of 'The Cave', an idyllic retreat of three separately rented houses, the villa enjoys complete privacy with its own independent entrance and enclosed outdoor space. Arranged over one level, the spaces unfold into each other, and there is a feeling that the rooms have been carved out from the walls. Typically constructed with lightly rendered walls and a traditional terracotta tiled roof, the interior is minimal, with punctured openings that light the spaces and frame views of the surrounding landscape. Baring a neutral palette, the furnishings are well-considered, made from natural materials that, whilst muted in colour, offer an assortment of textures, making the rooms comfortable and inviting.

A main living space acts as a pivot point, with a comfortable L-shaped sofa area positioned to one side. Framing a central coffee table, one length of sofa faces a flat-screen TV, whilst the other looks to the window to enjoy a picture frame-like view out to the fields beyond. Classy yet informal, it is a wonderful place to relax throughout the day, lazing on the cushions with a book or simply absorbing the tranquillity of the surrounding landscape as horses and cows graze in the neighbouring fields.

Leading off from this central space are the two bedrooms, each minimally furnished with natural tones and characterful low-level lighting that creates a warmth and romantic setting. Both enjoy a large king-sized bed with luxury linen, and air conditioning units ensure that you can keep cool during the hottest summer nights. Both bedrooms feature equally tasteful ensuites, one with a bathtub and shower and the other with a walk-in shower.

Making the most of the warm climate, the kitchen is found on a covered terrace beneath the overhanging roof. Well-equipped, it has plenty of appliances and utensils to prepare meals throughout your stay. An informal seating area backs onto the kitchen, with comfortable armchairs and sofas that are perfect for relaxing in the shade or enjoying a cold bottle of wine during the evenings. The dining table is positioned to the far side with space for four people.

Extending from the villa, the garden is enclosed with palms and olive trees and surrounded by a fence to create a completely private setting. From the concrete terrace, a grassy lawn leads down to the far end, where there is a yurt, perfect for spending some time in the shade or practising yoga. A charming dark wood sauna is tucked into one corner, whilst to the other side is the wonderful outdoor pool inviting you to take a refreshing dip and cool off from the heat of the sun. Slightly raised from the level of the grass, the pool is framed by timber decking, where you will find generously sized sun loungers welcoming you to recline beneath the clear blue skies or rest in the shade under the umbrella.

Next door to the property, but still separate and private, are the sister villas, Casa Cueva Lujo and Casa Cueva Pequena. All three of these properties contain a different amount of bedrooms and can be booked independently or together - enquire today for more information!

Tucked in the peaceful foothills of Betis, the villa enjoys a rural setting whilst being just 20 minutes from the historic town and golden beaches of Tarifa, making it the ideal spot to explore the wonderful surrounding region.

The coast is easily accessible, with the glorious sands of Valdevaqueros just 8 minutes by car. Backing onto rugged dunes, the beach extends to almost 5km, making it perfect for long walks, whilst the region's unique wind conditions offer a haven for wind and kite-surfers. Take a lesson from one of the many surf schools or look on from the beach and admire the numerous colourful sails racing across the water. With fine white sand and clear waters, the surrounding coastline is a delight to explore. Head just a few kilometres west to find the beautiful beach and town of Bolonia. Sat on the limits of the Parque Natural del Estrecho, the stretch of sand hugs the coast before rising to form the mighty Duna de Bolonia. Reaching 30m tall, the substantial dune is a marvel to behold as it constantly changes shape, morphing its form under the winds shifting direction.

A circular walk from Bolonia to Playa Canuelo is a great way to take in this unique setting from all perspectives. The route takes you west past the ruins of Baelo Claudia, a historic Roman town and an important archaeological discovery. Passing a number of Old Roman quarries, the walk leads through a pine forest to the Camarinal Lighthouse, where you can enjoy magnificent views down to the neighbouring beaches where you can stop off for a swim or circle back and return to Bolonia for a well-earned lunch or beer. The small town has a handful of restaurants to enjoy, such as Restaurant Otero Bolonia, with a simple fish-orientated menu where you can sample the catch of the day whilst looking out to sea.

The main town of Tarifa is a short drive from the villa and a must-see! An important geographic point for both military and trade, the charming town is a network of narrow streets with traditional whitewashed houses tucked between an assortment of architectural styles. Wander the cobbled alleys of the Old Town, passing beneath Puerta de Jerez, the only medieval gateway still standing, or visit the imposing Castillo de Guzman dating back to the 10th century. Numerous cafes and restaurants line the port, inviting you to rest in the shade and enjoy a bite to eat or a cold drink whilst taking in the daily activity. For a lively evening, Bar el Frances has a great ambience. Positioned on a street corner in the Old Town, there is pavement seating and a changing chalkboard menu offering up an array of traditional tapas plates and local dishes. A great way to spend a balmy evening and mix with both locals and tourists alike.
