About this property

Villa Nemo is a dreamlike villa set on a hillside in the hamlet of San Terenzo Monti, overlooking the Apuan National Park in Tuscany.

Built on several levels with terraces and loggias, this restored country house has maintained many of its original features and has been decorated in a classic Italian style to further highlight its old-world charm. Inside, guests can find six well-proportioned apartments spread across two floors, each equipped with at least one en-suite bathroom. The large living room benefits from exposed wooden beams, a stone fireplace and traditional furnishings, and acts as the perfect place for everyone to gather for a meal and downtime in the evenings.

The outside grounds are equally enticing – a picturesque courtyard, shaded pergola and comfortable seating areas together create a welcoming feel, inviting you to kick back while gazing out at the mountains looming above. On a sunny morning, choose to have your breakfast al-fresco whilst listening to songbirds and enjoying the summery scents of lavender bushes, lilies, roses and cypress before sunbathing or taking a dip in the infinity pool. Evenings are best spent in the company of an aperitif and then tucking into a barbecued feast.

Although it’s almost impossible to tire of a place such as Villa Nemo, it would be a missed opportunity not to venture outside when guests have the entire Tuscany and Liguria regions at their fingertips.

A supermarket can be found just a 5-minute walk away while the closest village is located only 15 minutes away by car has a restaurant and local amenities. Neighbouring Aulla is tucked a few more minutes away and benefits from family-owned wineries, bars, trattorias as well as shops where you can stock up on Italian hams, cheeses and fresh fruit.

Just under a 30-minute drive away in Equi Terme, you can enjoy healing thermal pools and fantastic treatments that will make you feel rejuvenated and refreshed. Also around a 30-minute drive away, Lerici is a town and commune forming a part of the Italian Riviera and its port is dotted with fishing and sailing boats. Take a stroll here before heading downtown to explore its many souvenir shops, restaurants and cafés with tables stretching all the way to the cobbled streets.

The far edge of Tuscany, the Lunigiana region is nestled between valleys that open at the foot of two mountain chains – the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines and the Apuan Alps. Taking its name from the particular beauty of the moon when framed against the mountain peaks, the region is home to some of Italy’s wildest and most unspoilt countryside.

Get your walking boots on and set out to discover the nearby Apuan National Park – a sprawling mountain range with an array of hiking and walking trails offering unobstructed views of limestone peaks and the sea below. Another atmospheric experience is visiting the Cascate di Fiacciano – a forest with canyons and mini waterfalls with azure-clear water.

You can’t say you’ve visited this part of Italy without ticking Cinque Terre off your bucket list. The coastal area comprises five villages which are connected by scenic walking paths and form part of the Cinque Terre National Park, a unesco World Heritage Site. Overlooking the Ligurian Sea, you can walk on the terraces built on the rugged, steep landscape right up to the cliffs where lovers engrave their initials into the stone walls.

Other notable cities/towns include La Spezia and Sarzana, both within 40 minutes’ drive away and further down from La Spezia lies a village known as Porto Venere. This little village is known for its Gothic-style church of St. Peter, imposing cliff top fortress and Porto Venere Regional National Park – a protected area comprising Palmaria island full of spectacular beaches and hidden caves.

Another great place worth visiting during your Italian getaway and located less than an hour away by car is Carrara, notable for the white or blue-grey marble quarried there ever since the Roman Age. In addition to visiting the city’s marble quarries, you can also explore its museum of statuary and antiquities and walk around the pretty historic centre filled with Renaissance architecture.

True jet-setters will love that the jewel of the Italian Riviera, Portofino can be reached in under two hours by car, ideal for a day trip or overnight stay. Full of azure pools, colourful houses and a cobbled piazzetta overlooking the harbour, it captures the old-world glamour of Italy’s chicest seaside retreat.

Our group vacation was to reconnect five lifelong girlfriends. We brought our friends and families together too and the trip was magical. The villa is even more gorgeous in person. The landscaping, replete with natural beauty, is comfortable and inviting- flowers, herb and vegetable gardens, grape vines, and ponds with fish and frogs. Don't forget to bring a swimsuit because the pool saved us all on HOT July days and nights. The village is very small and intimate, atop narrow, winding, country roads, bordered with grape orchards, small shops, roadside water fountains of white marble statues, and a local cemetery. Plan to do your driving in the daylight; the views are not to be missed, and the roads are more manageable. The local church community center allows villa guests to mingle with villagers over ice cream on weekend evenings. Church bells ring out the hours, lending warmth and charm. The owners took care of all our questions and needs. The apartments provided privacy for couples and families. Communal areas were great for dining and lounging. A road just outside the villa is the perfect place for a morning walk through luscious green trees and picturesque farms with old farmhouses. The site houses deep wounds from World War II, explained by placards along the route. It is a place of commemoration and healing. A medieval castle, mineral springs, quarries, Pisa, and the sea, were great day trips. Overnights elsewhere included Parma & Pompeii.
