About this property

Located on a hillside overlooking Lazio’s lush green valleys and the Cimini Mountains, you will find I Cavalieri. With walking routes, woodlands and villages on your doorstep, this is a fantastic base for exploring central Italy.

This historic home has long been owned by noble and princely families who lived at the heart of this thriving agricultural community. The villa has a long and fascinating history and is a truly unique place to stay for a holiday.

The current owners of the home have taken care to preserve the centuries-old exteriors and period features while adding contemporary features and beautiful interior decor. Working with an artist and using the highest quality furnishings, the owners have created a warm and welcoming home.

As you enter the villa you will find the communal spaces; an open-plan living and dining room and a fully-fitted kitchen which can be used by everyone in the house to come together. The main villa also has three suites, one of these is located on the ground floor and the other two are upstairs. As well as comfy king-sized beds, the suites have TVs, living spaces with additional sofa beds and chic bathrooms.

On top of the main home, I Cavalieri also has a separate cottage in the grounds which has a king-sized bed, a kitchen, a bathroom and a living and dining space. As each of the suites and the cottage have their own living spaces, families or friends can travel together but also enjoy some privacy in their own spaces.

As well as stunning interiors, the villa is well-equipped with modern conveniences such as air-conditioning, Wi-Fi, TVs and PlayStations. If you would like to you are also able to book a number of great additional services which will make your trip even more relaxing, such as airport pick-ups, babysitting, guided tours and yoga classes.

The garden here is a lovely oasis filled with lavender, established trees, lawns and covered dining spaces. There is a private pool with plenty of sun loungers for lazy days outdoors enjoying each other’s company and the picturesque views. The garden even has its own church in the grounds which can be used for events with prior arrangement.

When you wish to get out and discover more of the local area, you do not need to travel far to visit ancient vineyards, historic villages with shops and eateries and woodland walking routes which are all under 3km away.

A little further out you can visit the towns of Soriano nel Cimino and Orte which are each 17.5km away and the medieval city of Viterbo which is 22km away. From the villa you can even visit Rome for a day trip as it is located 70km away which will take you just over an hour’s drive and is well worth the trip!

Close to a charming village in an area filled with forests, lakes, ancient castles and medieval towns to visit, I Cavalieri is ideally situated for a trip exploring the green heart of Italy.

The home is set on a hillside which looks down over the verdant valleys below. This area has been settled since pre-historic times and as you look out over the picturesque landscape you will feel that little has changed here in centuries as the panoramic views are unspoilt. The locals here still rely heavily on agriculture and many work on traditional farms and vineyards which surround the villa. This means that there is plenty of delicious local produce to enjoy in Lazio, including hazelnuts, wine and olive oil. If you would like to sample these products you can purchase tasty hazelnut cookies known as Tozzetti at the nearby markets and visit family-owned vineyards for guided tours. The world-class wine and oils are also celebrated at festivals held in August and November. As well as being used for growing a bounty of crops, the land around the villa is also dotted with walking and hiking trails or you could opt to traverse the hills on horseback with a nearby equine centre.

When you need to pick up some groceries or want to go out for lunch then the nearest amenities can be found around 1km away in a small village. A wider range of shops, restaurants and attractions can be discovered in Vignanello which is 2km away from the house. This pretty town is dominated by its castle which was first used as a monastery in the 9th century before being extended and owned by some of Italy’s most powerful families including the Farnese and Sforza families. Today the castle is open to visitors on weekends and it is worth booking in advance as people love to explore this gorgeous building. The gardens of the castle are an attraction in their own right and were added in 1611; they are considered some of the finest Renaissance gardens in all of Italy.

Vignanello is one of countless towns and villages that you can visit with ease in this area. Orte is another place you could visit for the day and is located 13km away by car. Orte is a hill town which gained importance in the Roman era as it was home to the only bridge to Rome across the River Tiber. Today the bridge is in ruins but the imposing cliffs, riverside grasslands and the medieval centre all make this a lovely place to wander around for the afternoon. In town you can see churches and palaces from the middle ages, the Roman aqueduct, pillars and carvings, plus Renaissance gateways, everywhere you look there is something interesting to catch your eye. Orte also has a great selection of shops and restaurants.

Viterbo is 22km away from the villa and is a beautiful, historic city. This city was once home to the papacy who resided in the incredible gothic Palazzo dei Papi in the 12th and 13th centuries. The pope’s palace and the cathedral should definitely make your itinerary if you choose to visit the town. On top of enchanting palaces and a fantastic array of shops and eateries, Viterbo is also known as a spa town; you can soak in the natural hot springs outdoors amidst the rolling fields or at one of the luxurious spas which also offer treatments.

When holidaying in Lazio it is always worth making a day trip to the capital city of Rome which is 70km away by car. If you would prefer a day at the beach then you could visit Lake Bracciano which is 41km away or head to the coast which is around 80km.

I spent five days in this structure full of history but above all surrounded by the greenery and silence of the countryside, a context that favoured relaxation from every point of view. In addition to the furnishings, a perfect combination of history and modernity, I underline the availability of the owners in contacting us to fulfill all our requests (from the masseuse Francesca to Mrs. Luigina who came to delight us with her dishes in the structure). Place that lives up to its reputation, GO THERE!

This villa is so special that it is difficult to do it justice in words alone! The property is private and exceptionally well maintained. We went for my 40th birthday (7 ladies) so we had the whole villa as well as the second garden house. The house is renovated and furnished with taste and thoughtfulness. It was impeccably clean. The owners were super responsive and gave us lots of advice as they have in-depth knowledge of the region. The beds and pillows are extremely comfortable. We really didn't want to leave and I think we will be back! A big thank you again to the owners for allowing us to experience this jewel!
