Head south to the bustling town of Carrick-on-Shannon, known as the ‘marina capital of Ireland’, providing an attractive focal point of the town, plus there is lots of history to uncover with a visit to the unusual Costello Chapel, which is believed to be the smallest chapel in Europe. Other attractions worth adding to your list include the Lough Key Forest and Activity Park for zip-wiring and bmx riding and the coastal delights, beaches and stunning scenery of Couny Sligo. Drumshanbo the nearest village was only 3 minutes by car or a 10 minutes walk. Here you will find two supermarkets two pubs and even a fish and chip shop. The area is well placed for the popular Carrick on Shannon and other outlying villages with authentic old Irish pubs like Beirne’s of Battlebridge ,6km from the White House, this pub is also dog friendly.

Our experience in this house was our worst. Firstly the house was freezing when we arrived so we spent a few hours with our coats on. The double room was in fact very small with bedside locker and light only on one side, The en-suite shower was tiny. Little more than 3ft in width. No mirror over the sink but a mirror cabinet in a corner by the toilet. No shaving unit. The shower was one we didn’t use as the water was a weak or very light flow. No place to hang the towels. The family bathroom was always cold. The shower an electric one but at times the doors of the shower jammed. Only 1 of the 6 lights worked and the towel rail never heated. With rain the dogs walked through small pools of muddy water to get to the grass. The outside lights at the back didn’t work. The outside of the house needed TLC. No winter flowers. It looked unwelcoming. We were informed not to use the downstairs toilet except for no1, otherwise it gets clogged. The photos of the house misrepresent the house - apart from the kitchen photos. It also felt the owners had moved out to let us in. There were a supply of shoes in the front hall. We contacted the owner on some of the above and were told the clothes were theirs and the heating couldn’t be on when we arrived as they lived at a distance. It is the first ever holiday home that didn’t have a welcome pack and though it advertises an open fire, there was nothing there, including no instructions on using the fire, no first pack of firewood. We arrived late as a member of our party died suddenly. We asked if there could be a reduction that could be returned to them. We were given a list of why that couldn’t happen. We were quite shocked at that - basically on the grounds of compassion for the impacted couple. On the positive side: beds were comfortable and once the house got warm, it was comfortably warm. Games room is fine for kids. We left early. In essence we stayed two full days - not counting our arrival date or departure date. And these two days seemed two days too long! It was certainly not like any holiday home we have used - and we use many, This house needs a lot doing to it to put it on par with other holiday homes of the same price.
