It’s a picturesque port with a sandy beach and deep blue waters surrounded by rocky cliffs. The sun-drenched Greek island is well known for its fine stretches of idyllic coastline, rugged mountainous landscape and rich heritage – perfect for holidaymakers of any age.

The town of Agios Nikolaos, the capital of Lasithi, is a 10-minute drive from the villa where you’ll find plenty of local restaurants and shops. In Agios Nikolaos, you can head to the harbour and Voulismeni Lake, where you’ll find eateries lining the waterfront. Look out for fresh seafood and Cretan cheeses or relax with a cooling drink while soaking in the beautiful surrounding.

For a change of scenery from the resorts private beach, there’s plenty more swimming spots nearby. In the town, Ammos Beach and Kytroplatia Beach are popular choices with clear, calm waters that are ideal for younger swimmers, and they’re close to all the amenities of the town. You could also go to Almyros Beach which is a longer stretch of coastline, set in a sheltered cove.

For day trips from Agios Nikolas, you can hire a bike and explore the surrounding villages, including Elounda an old fishing village with whitewashed houses and quaint streets. You could also take a boat and head to Spinalonga, the smallest of the Cretan islands, with its old Venetian fortress. There you can swim and snorkel off the beaches on the Kolokytha Peninsula.

I went along with family got a villa, but me last minute got a room. I was able to call a buggy to be transported to and from the villa very easily. The villa had a pool but as we had children in the party we requested the pool be heated to a higher temperature which they accommodated. About the children's club: it was fantastic. The children who are quite picky actually refused to be collected at lunch time and wanted to stay until closing. Their staff was fantastic. The room service arrived hot and whenever we are in the main resort it was very varied in themed buffet style. I would highly recommend and am excited to visit one of their winter resorts

We just returned from a 7 night stay at The Residence (3 adults and 3 children under 5). There are lots of positives - stunning setting in the cove, beautiful infinity pool, great architecture, very friendly service from staff. Our case went missing on the outbound flight and turned up two days later and the hotel were good about phoning on our behalf to check its whereabouts The funiculars were a novelty but it became a bit of a logistical game in order to catch one at the right time (and took a good 2 days to get our bearings in terms of working out which one to catch). The adjacent hotel kids club also looked nicely run . Its a shame there is no lift through the central part of the hotel right down to the beach. The beach is accessed by two flights of stairs which is impractical with a buggy/small children. Villa guests get preferred seating in a separate area on the beach! We only dined in the buffet restaurant once and the food was average and its pretty bustling atmosphere with lots of kids (ours were in bed!). We dined on the half board dine around programme a few times and loved the Ocean restaurant and the Taverna special Greek evening was also worth going to. We also left the hotel two evenings to eat in Agios Nikolas (would recommend Pelagos restaurant). Breakfast for villa guests is in the Ocean restaurant and it was very calm and excellent service - can't comment on the main buffet breakfast but we enjoyed sitting in the Ocean restaurant garden at the back and it was very relaxing. It was unfortunate that for the first 2/3 days we had horrendous winds (which I have since read are very common and occurred throughout July this summer) and it made the pool and umbrellas unusable and also the first three rows at the beach due to sand being blown. This got us off to a bad start but fortunately it stopped on day 3 and we had a lovely last 4 days without the wind and for that reason the hotel really grew on us from that point on. Getting a sun lounger at the main pool is also tricky unless you are prepared to stay there all day (not practical with young kids). Overall the staff were very friendly and helpful.
