About this property

With views of vineyards as far as the Dordogne, Domaine Dans Les Vignes is a beautiful and unique French country home near some of the most prestigious wineries of southern France, a short drive from the idyllic wine-town of Saint-Émilion.

This 18th century domaine is wonderful for a group of friends or two small families with six charming bedrooms spread across two wings, the main villa and the neighbouring guest house, each with their own living spaces and well-equipped kitchens.

Step into the typically Bordeaux entrance of the Maison de Maître and feel a strong sense of history around you with its beautifully tiled floor and antique furnishings. A grand kitchen, historic dining area and cosy TV room can also be found in the main villa alongside a delightful summer lounge with doors leading to the pool; an ideal spot for a private wine-tasting that can be arranged by the hospitable owners, perhaps even featuring a bottle of Grand Cru from their impressive wine cellar.

The smaller guest house also has a pretty living-dining room and perfectly equipped kitchen plus there’s a second lounge that can be set up for a visiting masseur, another one of the services that can be offered here.

There are six air-conditioned bedrooms, each with their own individual style, some featuring characteristics such as a canopied bed, antique pieces, impressive paintings and a whirlpool bath in one of the suites. With luxurious quality beds and sleeping only 10-12 guests, you can be assured of a restful night whichever bedroom you may choose.

Gaze at the vineyards from the swimming pool, laze in the warmth on the raised sun terrace then enjoy al-fresco meals by the pool house and barbecue. Find a picturesque spot in the landscaped gardens with a glass of wine from a neighbouring vineyard, listening to the trickle of the fountain and admiring the summer roses.

On the road leading to Saint-Émilion, you are surrounded by excellent vineyards and wineries; private tours and tastings can of course be arranged and look out for summer concerts in local wine-châteaux. Visit the town itself and be enchanted by its history as you explore its steep winding lanes.

Even closer to home, on the banks of the Dordogne river, is the small town of Castillon-la-Bataille, home to famous re-enactments that all the family will love in the height of the summer. Pick up morning pastries from the boulangerie, peruse the delights of the weekly market and hire canoes on the river.

Visit some of the villages of the Dordogne such as Sainte-Foy-la-Grande and Eynesse or continue as far as Bergerac with its Maisons des Vins. Heading west, take the train to Bordeaux or drive to the Atlantic coast to enjoy oysters and white wine by Arcachon bay. Close to the borders of the Gironde and Dordogne, this is a wonderful region of southern France for all to explore. Close to the Dordogne border, in the Gironde department, Domaine Dans Les Vignes enjoys a delightful setting with panoramic views of the surrounding vineyards and beautiful valleys, only 12km from the idyllic wine-town of Saint-Émilion.

There is a small local village within 1km but you will find the nearest boulangerie and food shops in Castillon-la-Bataille (5km) which also hosts a Monday morning market. On the banks of the Dordogne river, it’s a pleasant town to explore and in the summer you can hire canoes on the river. The town is most famous for its re-enactments of the battles of Castillon which take place on Friday and Saturday evenings in late July and August, featuring over 500 actors and 50 horses – not to be missed!

Across this region you have many other wonderful events such as classical music concerts in surrounding wine châteaux near Saint-Émilion and many local festivities taking place such as the Saint-Émilion Jazz Festival in late June/July.

Indeed, at any time of year Saint-Émilion (12km) is a picture-perfect town to explore. Dating back to pre-historic times, there are many historic gems to discover as you wander around the charming steep lanes from beautiful Romanesque churches and underground catacombs to the famous monolithic church created from a block of stone. The town and its surrounding vineyards are now classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

As well as private wine-tasting in the domaine’s summer room, private tours and tastings can be arranged at many of the local vineyards and wine châteaux, including the services of an experienced oenologist. From here you can cover the Bordeaux wine regions of Saint-Émilion, Pomerol, Medoc and Sauternes.

The owners can arrange bike hire for you as a great way to explore the area surrounding the domaine. There is also horse-riding nearby offering hacks through the vineyards as well as tennis in Saint-Émilion and golf at Tom Doak’s stunning Golf Saint Emillionais (5km).

The Dordogne is also waiting to be explored whether it’s a trip to nearby Sainte-Foy-la-Grande (23km) with its Saturday morning market or a little further south to Issigeac (60km), an incredibly picturesque town with a delightful market on a Sunday morning.  The Jardins de Sardy (16km) are also just a short drive away whilst the historic wine-town of Bergerac (48km), with its pretty old town and famous Maisons des Vins, is just under an hour by car.

Heading west, Bordeaux (55km) is a fantastic day out and you could even consider taking the 45-minute train from nearby Castillon-la-Bataille. Wine-lovers will appreciate La Cité du Vin or you can just spend time admiring the beautiful architecture in the city and experiencing its vibrant restaurant scene.

You can even reach the Atlantic coast in just over ninety minutes with the amazing bay of Arcachon (115km) and incredible Dune du Pyla (120km).

The property consists of two separate attached houses with six large bedrooms and five bathrooms, some with tubs and separate showers. The description was accurate and we were provided with a layout prior to our arrival. The main kitchen, breakfast table, dining room and lounges were spacious, clean and well furnished. There are several outdoor tables, chairs and umbrellas. The pool is very nice, unfortunately the constant rain didn't allow us to enjoy it. The owner's husband was present on the property in a separate apartment, and he was readily available to quickly handle any minor problems we experienced and to give directions and advice on local events. The TV room was a great place to sit, drink Olivier's wine and watch the Euro 2016 football matches. Wi-fi was fast and reliable. The adjacent village is quite small; however, there is an incredible restaurant in the chateau. They have three rooms, but will take reservations for dinner if you don't want to cook at the villa. The best boulangerie is in the main town of Castillon, just a few kilometers down the hill. There is also a very good market there on Mondays and several large food stores. A car is essential, but Castillon also has a train station where you can catch the local trains to St. Emilion, Libourne and Bordeaux. Trains are the best way to get into and out of Bordeaux as the traffic is worse than Houston's. I highly recommend this property for any large group looking to spend time in this beautiful area just 10 kilometers east of St. Emilion. Because of the layout, smaller groups may also find Domaine Dans Les Vignes to be the perfect place to stay.
