What our customers say about their holidays

Coles Cottage owner Geoff seems like a really nice guy.

He called me about a week before to explain entrance and contact details for the housekeeper which I thought was very good. It is a very old cottage but has been semi modernised inside whilst still being quite cosy. It is extremely well equipped too with all the pots, pans, cups, glasses and utensils etc. Washing machine, freezer, microwave etc. There was, and it needs stressing as the pictures dont really show it, plenty of room inside and out. There were 7 of us, 5 adults and 2 children and we never felt as if we were getting under each other's feet, as it were. My Mum and Dad stayed in the ground floor bedroom which was very useful. If you like books, there are many in many places to choose from. If you like music, there is a very extensive and varied collection of LP's which we all enjoyed listening to! There is also a large lawn , very quiet and private and lovely on a sunny day. A little overgrown. The housekeepers , Sheila and David (I think) were very helpful too and on arrival , Sheila had provided us with scones, jam and cream as a welcome! Just a couple of small points and purely as constructive input from having stayed here and experienced it, maybe have a look at fixing taps in bathroom and kitchen as both stiff and or in need of washers or valves. I explained to David when he came to replace a bulb. Also, i appreciate that it gets cleaned each week before new visitors arrive but it could probably do with a 'deep' clean once in a while and removal of many cobwebs we found. I hoovered around a couple of times in the week but at first, the rechargeable hoover didn't seem to be working so I stripped it down , cleared out the pipe and filters etc and voila ! Took about 2 minutes. Works a treat now. One last thing, it could probably do with a freshen up on the decorating although I fully appreciate that could just be a matter of taste. I do hope you don't mind me mentioning these points, I just thought it may make things more enjoyable for further visitors. Other than that, we found Coles Cottage to be a great base to eat , sleep and relax together as a family while visiting a number of different places in Devon and Cornwall this week. Thank you. Richard Grace.

We have just come back from Coles Cottage, a family of 2 adults and 2 young boys (4 & 7).

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the beautiful and very quirky cottage. The original part of the cottage has slightly slanting steps and landing, which we got used to quite quickly. The parking is easy and in a large area. Sheila and David are the housekeepers and are both lovely and are easy to get hold of to help via email/phone or popping round with homemade scones! There is a new double bed in the room downstairs and 3 sofas in the living room. The cottage is very well equipped, lots of utensils, mirrors, cleaning products etc, especially the kitchen which exceeded our expectations. The 2 bathrooms/toilets are very useful and the shower is wonderful but if you are quite tall you wouldn't be able to stand up in it as there are many low ceiling areas. The garden is pretty, large and private, the boys enjoyed an easter egg hunt there and the road was unexpectedly busy including a main bus route although it looks very quiet. We didn't mind the traffic as it drove straight past as it wasn't excessive and didn't distract us when we were enjoying sunny weather in the garden. There are original windows, no double glazing and lots of old books, maps, games, paper and stationary etc as per the description. Lots to look at whilst relaxing. The only things that would have made the stay even better would be a blind on the kitchen window as it gets very sunny and hot in there and a larger tv, it is only 21" or 24" and a separate dvd player as the one on the television is temperamental and sometimes doesn't work at all and cuts out the sound. This is a minor thing though. There are no recyling bins for card/paper/plastic either, which would have been better if there was somewhere to put it but Sheila said to leave it in a bag and she would sort it out. The cottage instructions are a bit out of date in some areas. All in all a really beautiful cottage, the pictures don't do it justice and a lovely part of the country, close to Waitrose in Holsworthy and nearby Bude and Bideford., a recommended stay.

The property was clean, well equipped and comfortable.

The hot tub was a lovely extra and the reason we booked the property. There were fresh flowers in lots of the rooms downstairs and a sachet of cappuccino and a biscuit x4. Bedding and towels were fresh and clean. The owner popped in to say hello the morning after our arrival and lives just across the field at the back. Silver Crooks could be so much better. The upstairs shower was little more than a dribble and the downstairs only a little better. The bed in the master bedroom despite being comfortable, was really creaky. We had quite disturbed sleep and left a day early. When it rained the water leaked through the conservatory roof and we were often mopping and trying to catch it in the mop bucket. The kickboard under the dishwasher came off on our toes every time the dishwasher door was opened. Cars move very fast on the road outside so we had to use the car to get into the village as there was no footpath and the route across the fields was too muddy to use. The property itself is full of old vintage charm. It would have been nice if the welcome features included a small basket of local produce, some milk or tea. A first basket of logs or a fire being set up in the grate in case it was needed would have been a nice touch. The cupboards were totally bare, not even a pinch of salt and pepper could be found so you will need to bring EVERYTHING with you.

We had a lovely stay at Coles Cottage for the week.

The house was very comfortable and big, the garden with its beautiful flowers was also gorgeous to sit in with a cuppa. It was super clean everywhere. The rooms were good sized and the beds very comfortable. we struggled with the bathroom as it has a very low beam in the doorway to enter and as taller people (5ft 8 and my husband 6ft 4 and daughter of 5ft 7) we had several bumps in our heads, you are best to walk down 2 steps into the room backwards. the shower is also low for taller people and we had to constantly stand crouched to use it, and isn't very powerful so did take a while to use. it's all reflected as its old cottage, with all original built features so was to be expected really, it took some getting used to for us. The kitchen had everything you could need. Thank you to Shelia for the lovely delicious Scones that were waiting for us, was such a treat. it was a central place to stay and most places just a 20 minute drive away, bude beaches our particular favourite place and tintagel fir a castle visit and wonderful views was further out but well worth it. The little village had most things needed to pop in, but check times of closing as we are spolit having things open whenever we need. We really enjoyed our holiday in Devon and all it had to offer.

On the whole, it was a lovely cottage, and we had a really great holiday.

However, the cottage is listed as being suitable for 6 adults and 1 child, and we did not find this the case. The sofa bed was at least 20 years old, and sloped into a v with a 1 inch thick mattress. I tried sleeping on this with my three year old son, and we just sank into the middle and it was extremely uncomfortable, there is no way you could sleep on it for a week. We resorted to pulling the cushion out of the sofa bed, and just putting it on the floor, however when you are paying for a cottage, you don't really want it to feel like camping. This could be easily fixed by putting a double bed in this room, as we did not use the room for anything else other than sleeping, as there was plenty of space in the rest of the cottage. The shower was also a little disappointing, as it would cut out if anyone flushed the downstairs toilet, or if the washing machine was on. For the taller ones amongst our party it was also a little low down, but this was hard to avoid due to the character of the building. We loved the records, games and books and our children really enjoyed playing in the large garden. There was plenty of seating, a bbq and the kitchen was well equipped. We also enjoyed the scones jam and cream on arrival.
