Things to do in Dymchurch
Dymchurch is a delightful coastal village on the south east coast in Kent with a long award-winning beach. The village is famously the home of Russell Thorndyke’s fictional smuggler hero The Rev Dr Christopher Syn, really retired pirate Captain Clegg. It’s the perfect base from which to explore the unspoilt landscape of Romney Marsh reclaimed from the sea over centuries. Popular attractions in and around the village as well as the beach include Dymchurch Martello Tower, one of the few Napoleonic Martello Towers open to the public.
Sandy Beach
The miles of sandy beach here at Dymchurch attracts many to the area. It stretches all the way from Folkestone in the east to Dungeness in the west. At low tide the extensive sands are a site for donkey rides and are popular with families and for water sports such as kite surfing. Amusements parks and arcades are also in the village resort with classic rides featuring dodgems and a Ghost Train.

Birdwatchers and nature lovers will find much to please in the area including the vast coastal RSPB nature reserve at Dungeness. Cycling and walking trails also branch out from the excellent Romney Marsh visitor centre with fascinating exhibitions on just how much this coastline has shifted and changed since the great Medieval storms.
Two of Kent’s top tourist attractions are in the area. The Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway has been entertaining holidaymakers since it first opened in July 1927. All trains along this light railway line stop at busy station Dymchurch which remains much as it was in the late 1920s. If you are based in one of the nearby caravan/ holiday parks or seaside cottages in the village, the railway is the perfect leisurely way to explore the wider Romney Marsh area.
Dymchurch is also around a 15 minute drive from Port Lympne Wildlife Park with its acres of landscaped gardens and parkland home to tigers, lions, Indian elephants and many more rare and endangered species.
Getting to Dymchurch
Dymchurch is just a few miles west of Folkestone, the Channel Tunnel link and the fast M20 motorway making it easy to get to for visitors from the Continent and the wider UK. The light railway serves the Marsh coastal area and is a popular way of exploring the area. Regular bus services also run from Folkestone to Dymchurch.
