What our customers say about their holidays

    • Sylvia - Verified booking

When walking in Swallows Return it was nice inside for decoration and clean but shops was around 20 or more mins away.

Only one sofa which was just enough to fit 3 people on which needed more seating within the living area. The table and chairs in the living area was poor as these was outdoor seats and was hard to sit on. Beds wasn't very comfortable at all and pillows found lumpy. There is no washing machine which is needed and no freezer only a fridge so you would have to keep going out to top up food if staying 1 week or more. The utensils was poor when cooking did not have anything to drain off vegetables with and there was other utensils missing as well. The most thing was very bad there was no thermostat anywhere to put your heating on so there was no heating only a bathroom radiator and upstairs underfloor heating. There was supposed to under floor heating in the living area but again no controls for that either. As there was no heating we had to sit in with our coats on as it was so cold. The Landlady when we got there said she had put the heating on but we did not see nor did she tell us how that worked so I guess she operated the heating from her end as again no controls anywhere in the building apart from in the bathroom areas which wasn't sending out any form of heat at all. Over all would not go back to this place as wasn't impressed. :-( Which is a shame as it partly spoilt our holiday. The only one thing I can say it was very clean and the ice cream is something to die for, but apart from that 2 stars for me.

We really loved our stay at Gun End Cottage, a cottage full of character in a beautiful part of the world.

The cottage is well equipped and comfortable with an interesting history that you can read about in the information folder, this folder also has a tongue in cheek poem about the cottage and its idiosyncrasies which made us smile. It has a simple quaint appeal, if you appreciate fittings from an earlier age which we do, you will love this place, the brass door knobs, the leaded window's, the fireplaces and the Duckett basin in the upstairs bathroom. The nearest neighbours are the sheep in the field adjacent to the cottage. With every trip out you are immediately on a scenic drive. We visited Buxton, Leek and Longnor all places with individual appeal, as for walks, The Roaches, Lud Church and the Manifold Trail are great and can be made as leisurely or taxing to suit your own level of fitness. Another nice walk is to leave the cottage, turn left down the hill until reaching a footpath sign on the left for 'Gighall' which leads to the river Dane. Some of the more remote roads in this area are winding, narrow, steep and 'interesting' to say the least and one gets a great sense of achievement at journey's end.

A lovely little cottage with probably the best views we've ever had on holiday in the UK.

You really feel part of the farm as you are so close to the hens and sheep. The people on the farm and in the cafe are very friendly and approachable. When the fridge needs replacing, we would suggest getting one with an ice box as we missed having the opportunity to store a little bit of frozen food and to freeze the ice block for our picnic bag. We think people should be made aware that there can be quite a bit of noise from children (and indeed the parents) when they are squealing and shouting when playing on the equipment built on the back of the piggery. Monday and Tuesday are fine as the cafe and playground are closed then. It is a lovely environment for children visiting the farm for the day, animal petting, nature trails etc so we don't like to appear grumpy but just felt that the description saying 'peaceful new home' could a bit misleading.

This is an outstandingly beautiful venue.

The Piggery is delightful with everything you need and the views out of the window are priceless. The owners are absolutely lovely and welcoming and also a big shout out to the lovely young woman who works in the ice cream parlour who is outstanding in her service and warm and helpful personality. The homemade ice cream with so many different flavours to choose from is the best I have ever tasted. The farm itself is fantastic with an array of animals and there are gorgeous long walks which can be taken directly from the property. I loved my stay and there are many lovely places to visit. It really is an area of outstanding beauty and was very good for the soul. I would highly recommend this heavenly place. A big thank you to the team who made me so welcome and gave me the chance to enjoy the very best that the English countryside has to offer.

      Lovely stay.

It was very hot while we were there so had breakfast on the patio of ice-cream cafe just round the back of the apartment facing the lovely view of the countryside. The owners were very kind and offered a voucher for a free ice-cream of our choice all handmade. Fantastic. It is a working farm and we found out how many long hours and hard work goes into the upkeep of there business. We found it very interesting. A great place for families to visit for the morning or afternoon as they have a nature trail around the farm with the opportunity to look at goats, sheep, chickens, at close quarters. They have also a pottery workshop where you can book to paint a pot. We will return, as there are several more walks around the area where we would like to go. Thank you for a great few days.
