A medieval town steeped in history, the winding streets that characterise York are like nothing else. This stunning northern city boasts a wealth of cultural and historic landmarks, from 13th century walls to the magnificent York Minster cathedral. In Roman times York was the capital of Britain and the city’s long and prestigious heritage is everywhere you look. And you will feel rather prestigious yourself as you enjoy a memorable stay in an idyllic York cottage.

Things to do when you stay in York Cottages

It’s a cliché, but a visit to York really is like stepping back in time. While other cities have morphed and changed to keep up with the modern age, there are parts of the city that have remained untouched for nearly two millennia. York’s historic highlights are too numerous to mention, but include the remains of the Roman fort of Eboracum and the medieval street named the Shambles; a definite must visit. There are many more of York’s treasures on display in York Castle Museum, Yorkshire Museum and the Jorvik Viking Centre.

York is hugely popular with tourists, so you’ll find plenty to see and do as you meander through the ancient streets, including top drawer shops, cafés and restaurants serving hearty, traditional fare. Head away from the city and the tourists to discover some of the most breath-taking natural landscapes in the whole country, including North York Moors National Park and the Yorkshire Coast, so don’t forget to pack those walking boots, and a camera.

York cottages are the perfect accommodation if you’re looking to stay in this historic city, giving you the freedom and flexibility to explore, and packed with character. York cottages are your own little hideaway in easy reach of all the main landmarks – making an amazing family holiday that you’ll remember forever.

About York

What our customers are saying about our holiday cottages in york to rent.

"We have been coming to York for many years and without doubt this is the best accommodation we have stayed in. The apartment is located in a beautiful historic building (once a hospital) with views of the minster. There is a free designated parking place with secure electric gated access plus Sainsburys directly next door. The apartment is very well equipped and thoughtfully decorated in a lovely cottage style. Open plan kitchen diner with seating and TV plus living room upstairs with access to larger TV and books etc. The apartment has two double bed rooms with all you need, towels, hair dryer plus more. Kitchen is very well equipped with everything you would need for self catering. The big plus is location, you can see the city walls from the front door and with a minutes walk you are stood outside the Minster. A beautiful apartment in a wonderful location, we will be returning."

"Comfortable, clean and modern. 10 minutes walk to the Minster. Couldn't think of anything which you might need that wasn't supplied. It was nice to sit on the small balcony on sunny days. Spar shop, cafe and pub close by. If you like Indian, would recommend The Raj which is a 7 minute walk away. They deliver with a minimum spend of £15. Like the fact that the living area floor is carpeted with a thick carpet so that you don't have to tread lightly to avoid disturbing the neighbors in the apartment below. Got a bit of footfall noise from above at 6 in the morning when they presumably were getting ready to go to work and again in the evening but nothing to put us off booking again. A week isn't long enough to see all that York has to offer."

"We are a family of four with a young dog and this cottage couldn't have been more perfect for us. Its in a secluded location with views over a lovely meadow to trees beyond. Alan, the owner made sure we were comfortable and then left us to it. the welcome pack is a great idea, especially as we arrived late after a long drive. The cottage itself is spacious, well equipped and has a lovely feel to it. The bedrooms are large, the beds very comfortable and the whole place is immaculate. The area is a great base for touring and visiting so many great venues and we hardly scratched the surface - we'll definitely be going back!"

"Beautifully equipped barn , thoughtful owners who provided a lovely welcome basket! My mum wasn’t so happy though as it was only until we got there that there were notices saying dogs were not allowed upstairs ( living room etc all upstairs) so my mum had to stay in the kitchen quite s lot and even sleep on the daybed there during the night as the dog couldn’t be left alone in case he barked. Certainly owners preference which is fine but wouldn’t have chosen it if I knew there were such restrictions. Got a complaining mum for a week - not fun!! Otherwise for non dog owners - fabulous property."

"Very clean. Unfortunately its the first time we have arrived at a place to stay and had to go back out to get milk which wasnt a good start after driving five hours. No internet service at all. The sofa that is falling apart and the non-working tv remotes made the whole place a lot less comfortable. Double bed not king size. I think it needs a little tlc in places. No local places to eat. It was a car drive to anywhere. I dont think it was worth what we paid for five nights. A full week after us was available at a much lower price which says alot."
