Staying in Wiltshire

While you’re in Wiltshire, don’t miss the iconic white horses or the gorgeous gardens at Stourhead. The cathedral in Salisbury is rather magnificent as well. If that’s not enough of a reason to visit there’s boundless areas of countryside to get lost in by foot, bike or horseback with plenty of opportunity for fishing and golf as well. When you need refreshing after a good dose of exploring, head to one of the many delightful tea shops, pubs or restaurants. So whatever you want to do, and who ever you want to go with, Snaptrip has an excellent selection of deals on late availability cottages, apartments and lodges to choose from.

"S13731 is situated on the High Street in Royal Wootton Bassett, and is a couple of minutes walk from the shops, supermarkets, plenty of pubs and places to eat.The on-street parking didn't cause us an issue, we found a spot and had a few trips back and forth to unload, but nothing too problematic.First impressions, the cottage was decorated nicely for Xmas, and was extremely clean and smelt lovely. The owner had left a welcome pack, with basics like washing up liquid and other cleaning materials. It's nice to stay in a cottage where the owner visits and checks things over, unlike many which are cleaned by an outside company - you can tell there is a lot of effort made. The cottage is very old, and was tastefully decorated with individual touches, not just full of standard stuff, but plenty of cups, glasses, plates, cutlery, pans and dishes for cooking. We ate in a couple of nights, and the cooker/hob worked well.Previous review mentioned the upstairs floors slope, which they do a little - but the cottage is a few hundred years old - so it is to be expected - certainly nothing to do with safety.Living area was comfortable with blankets for cold nights, but once we had the open fire stoked up, we didn't need them. The logs at the hardware shop at the opposite end of the town was very reasonable for big bags.Didn't really use the garden due to it being winter, but it looked tidy.Stairs were not too steep considering it's an older property.Main bedroom with ensuite was nice, bed a bit too soft, but just personal preference.Second bedroom is at the front of the house, but very little noise from the main road, so our daughter slept well. Lots of books, games and DVD's provided for her to play with.Plenty of storage/cupboard space in both bedrooms.Bath/showers worked well, and was really handy having the bathroom downstairs too.All in all, a very nice few days away."

"The cottage served most of our needs for a short 2 night stay, however the request for a travel cot had not apparently been passed on by the booking agent to the owner. This meant that when we arrived in the evening (from Glasgow and Geneva) we had to phone the owner to get a bed for the toddler in our party to sleep on. We were provided with a camp bed by the owner, however this wasn't really suitable for a 2 year old as it was raised quite high from the ground. We made do during our short stay, however as the travel cot was a key requirement of our booking it was a disappointment to have to make extra arrangements when we arrived. Generally the cottage has most things you would expect, if a little on the shabby side, and there were some extras (like games console, DVDs and a coffee machine). It was useful having two bathrooms, since we were two couples staying together for a friend's location, and the cottage is very conveniently placed to walk to the shops in RWB. "

"Furnishing this property was clearly a labour of love for the owner. Decor is a matter of taste, but we found the downstairs quite overcrowded, making it hard to negotiate the space, especially by the front door. Removing most of the occasional furniture, plants and knick- knacks would help and this would also make the space more neutral for guests to enjoy. Unfortunately the beds were too soft for our comfort and three of us put our mattresses on the floor. As we stayed for eight weeks, this wasn't much fun! We would have appreciated weekly servicing of the cottage, especially as we had needed to make four separate bookings to cover our stay. We were provided with extra sheets so that we could change them once a fortnight, or wash them ourselves-not really satisfactory. We believe the landlady means well, however and she is making continual improvements. If the aspects we have mentioned were attended to, we would be happy to consider another visit."

"The only reason I didn't score a 10 on everything was due to having no parking and was knackered carrying stuff back and forth on arrival and departure.Arrived with the norm (cooking oil to sugar) only to find it in situ, so best to arrive and see what's there as shops five minutes away, saving the trips back to the car. Everything else was perfect - catered for all ages from books to games. Secure garden so children and dogs cannot escape and designed nicely.Although on a main road, surprisingly quiet, plus near to all amenities. Fields to run dogs only five minutes away.Would recommend, just pack light or bring a fit friend to be your cart horse!"

"we had a good time and felt the cottage was well equipped and clean. It had loads of helpful literature for the area .2 commentsfirstly , the directions are in correct for getting to the cottage! The restaurant mentioned is no longer there and is a private house ,which made locating the unsigned left hand turn difficult.Secondly, several people had mentioned fencing as dogs are welcomed. It could be easily resolved with wire netting around the field fencing already present. It would have made for a slightly more relaxing holiday knowing the dog couldn't sneak into the field!!Apart from that ..Great!"
