"Our stay at the cottage was fantastic,it was nice to be met by the lovely owner kathryn who asked that if we had any suggestions re:the property to let her know, we were very impressed with the comfort and quality of the fixtures and fittings 10/10 we also enjoyed using the woodburner. A lot of thought has gone into this lovely cottage down to the fresh flowers and delicious welcome tray (lovely choice of products, especially the scrumptious homemade cake and fresh eggs from kathryns son williams hens)thank you both, there is also local honey and eggs available to buy should you wish to.A varied selection of games and books and a wii to keep the children entertained. We enjoyed The North Bay Railway and Sea Life Sanctuary in Scarborough, also building sandcastles on Runswick Bay Beach,My grandson Leo says thank you william for your very tasty eggs, leo also loved meeting the 2 friendly dogs and Archie the owner kathryns horse,so all in all a super holiday and would love to stay at S86986 in the future,we would like to wish Paul,Kathryn,Lorraine and William all the best for the future, keep up the brilliant work."

"This cottage is fine but let down badly by a series of faults, each one minor but overall adding up to a feeling that both the owner and the local support staff don't care about the property. This is why I have only given it a 3 rating. As evidence, all these faults have been noted in the guest comments book in the cottage itself (some from many months back) but never acted on, so clearly no point in writing anything in there. A prime example is the fact that the front door handle is loose and easily dislodged from its working position (& falls off easily if you pull it)! This means that if you are inside the building and the outside handle is slightly dislodged then you can't open the door to get out! An obvious safety hazard.Other examples are the broken lid on the kitchen rubbish bin, the wonky toilet roll holder in on of the bathrooms, the BBQs unusable (dirty), the lack of information on how & when to deal with recyling and rubbish. If the owner were to spend a small amount of money replacing/repairing the various broken items future renters would be much more satisfied than I am."

"It's hard to say what the best thing about Bowden is: braving the wind to stand on the private beach at midnight on Christmas Eve; cooking Christmas dinner with red squirrels feeding outside the window; sitting in the conservatory watching the sky get dark across the beautiful grounds; running your hands over the banisters, lovingly restored with 24 coats of varnish; chatting to Peter the owner over coffee; piling into the living room with wine, cake and board games... The house is historic, majestic, magical and beautifully crafted, with space for a large extended family group to eat together and play together, or to spread out over several rooms for a variety of activities. A minor drawback is the disparity between the sweeping grandeur of the first floor and the servants quarters on the second floor: bedroom and bathroom arrangements need some negotiation to keep all group members happy! It was a privilege to be the first guests for Christmas 2017 and to feel that we honoured Peter's vision of bringing his beloved family home back to life for a new chapter in the house's history."

"I would stay at April’s cottage again, it was in a good location for us and met our requirements in terms of rooms, accepted dogs, parking for 4 cars. However there were quite a few negatives which could easily be rectified. Negatives:1) only 1 tea towel, this had already been highlighted more than once in the book onsite but nothing done about it. 2) garden needed more attention - lots of weeds, overgrown on steps3) blocked drains - we spoke to caretaker about this but nothing done about it4) blood on bed sheet & mattress protector!! Told caretaker and nothing done about that either 5) poisonous plants at back of garden!! Unacceptable. We had to buy a fitted sheet and tea towels from local supermarket as caretaker didn’t bother doing anything about this when we spoke to them. Left msg for owner too (number in final details e-mail) but was also ignored"

"The cottage was in a great location for what we wanted to do - seeing our son and family in Brighton etc (half-term). The underfloor heating in the bathroom was unexpected but very welcome. However, we did find that the heating system was either very hot or very cold - didn't seem to regulate at comfortable/medium. Only 4 plates and bowls, 1 tea towel and no serving dishes I thought was a little on the 'mean' side especially when trying to make a meal. ALSO, we had a masses of wasps which was quite worrying when our 4 year old grandson came to visit. Apparently, on speaking to the cleaner on the morning of departure the previous people had complained too but nothing seemed to have been done about them!! Advertised as having broadband but we couldn't pick up our e-mails etc which was quite frustrating as we were awaiting a couple of important ones."
