What our customers are saying about our Holiday Cottages In Uig To Rent.

Brian - verified booking

"If you want a completely different 'cottage' experience go no further than S22898. Communication with the owners was friendly and they were extremely helpful with information from the start. Walking into the cottage, well, you just had to stop and stare out of the panoramic windows at the most amazing sandy beach scenery. The cottage was immaculate and all accessories you could want including a coffee pod machine (although there were some pods to start with we would advise taking your own supply as the local Uig community shop did not stock them and its a 45 minute journey to Stornoway if you need them). For provisions for your holiday Tesco deliver to the door so we would advise ordering a week in advance before your trip. The bedrooms/bathrooms were just stunning and beds so comfy. Powerful binoculars were also supplied and we were fortunate enough to spy sea and golden eagles in the bay. We could not possibly fault anything at the cottage, the location was just breath taking. The beach is amazing and the softest sand we have ever walked on. The beach is extremely safe for children and the river that runs into the sea had lots of small fish in it for the kids to catch in their nets. There are areas next to the cottage on the sand which have clams and cockles (just look for the blowholes at low tide) and armed with a rake you can have yourself a potful of them in 15 minutes for clam chowder. The local amenities are local community coffee shops and it's a pleasure to watch locals get together there and speak their native tongue. The locals are very friendly and we helped a crofter gather his cows and move them to a new grazing area on one of our walks. where else could you do that? There are no local resturants close by but there is one being built so should be good for 2019 and we would recommend SEATREK for a variety of outdoor pursuits which is only a 10 minute drive away from the cottage. If you like fishing then you have virtually unlimited lochs to fish for free with the guidance of the local ghillie who was kind enough to visit us and point to where to fish. There is beautiful scenery all around and numerous hills to climb but sadly we ran out of time. If you want total peace and quiet and a get away from it all holiday, then look no further. I would class the holiday as self catering because of the distance you would have to travel to eat out and the local Uig community shop is horrendously expensive with very little selection available to you so ensure you have a meal menu for the week and buy provisions at Tesco in Stornoway or get them delivered. If we're fortunate with availability then we'll be back 2020 for another amazing week. I understand the cottage was a monumental effort to build with the regulations and professional services to deal with so our grateful thanks to George and Lynda for making the effort and enriching our lives with an experience we will never forget. Thank you for letting us spend time in your cottage."

"I did find the access hard to deal with at first, but on closer inspection after the initial driving up, there is a level piece of the driveway to park onto whilst dealing with the gate. Going back down could be a problem should there be much traffic on the road, as the slope is directly onto the bend in the road, but thankfully there is only occasional passing traffic. The house is well-equipped but in all my many experiences with holiday cottages I have never been to one with so many multi-plug adaptors and connectors for the electrical equipment. To me, the house has potential but needs a major over-haul for these basic things, another job needing is a replacement window at the front as the seal has gone so the wonderful view is somewhat smudged, at first I thought it needed cleaning and did in fact do this, but that didn't help. There are two small storage heaters which I found inadequate- though there are five portable convector heaters, an electric coal-effect fire and an open fire. Being on my own, no way was I going to purchase fuel for this on top of the quite high rent. I know it was my choice to go to a 3-bedroom house, the growing popularity of the island must certainly be a factor in the charge made. Should the cottage have full capacity of tenants then the fridge would be far too small, I found it just about adequate for myself. The problem is it has an internal ice-top-box which takes up valuable space, there is just a small freezer. My heart sank when I saw the provision of just one thin towel left for me on a bed. I was quite annoyed actually as the rent wasn't reduced for single occupancy, luckily there were more in the airing-cupboard. I also had to use one of the blankets from the cupboard under the bottom sheet as the mattress had just a thin protector and not conducive for feeling warm enough. I dealt with these practical issues adequately, though was quite surprised what I had to do to ensure the level of comfort in the house after reading the one previous review. It is great there for being totally detached with unobstructed views and the location suited me very well, as it was possible to walk from the door or park just a short distance to get into the hills or around the coast of Scalpay."

"I stayed here for a week, and took the dog. Stornoway is a very beautiful place, and the location was very quiet and very private, at the end of its own lane, so no passing traffic. There was a little back garden and an enclosed decking area that opened from the main bedroom where we sat on an evening and enjoyed looking over the loch, (in fact it felt like we had our own personal loch!) The manager was very helpful and the cottage was very well equipped, with everything you could wish for, and they left us some salmon in the freezer and milk etc (and even a tin of dog food!) for our arrival, which was lovely. It would have been great if there had been access to the back garden from the decking without having to walk round the outside. The main bedroom was large and comfortable. The other beds were sofa beds, one in the lounge and one in the conservatory. My adult daughter chose to sleep in the conservatory, but when the sun came up it got very hot very quickly, so unless the owners have now fitted blinds, you need to bear those things in mind. I can't comment on the sofa bed in the lounge because we didn't use it. Sadly, although we were promised internet access there was none all week (there was even a laptop there that we could use, which would have been helpful but there was no access from the cottage laptop either). There was also no mobile phone signal until we'd driven about 5-10 minutes up the road, although there was a house phone. The manager was lovely and said that the internet was often weak on the island, and that we could go up to her house and try, but we didn't want to do that as it felt a bit invasive. It was a shame because, expecting internet I had not set an away message for my email and had not researched restaurants or attractions (of which there are many), so we had to drive to the Isle of Harris Knitwear Company shop to get a bit of internet access. A warning about the internet prior to arrival would have made my trip better because I could have planned ahead more. So, to sum up, if you want to get away from it all and you don't need to be in touch with work or whatever, and you research what you want to do on the island prior to going, this cottage gets 100%!"

- Ca M, November 2014 - verified booking

"We had a lovely week on the Isle of Lewis, staying in this wonderfully well-equipped cottage. The setting was idyllic; off the beaten track and surrounded by water, hills, and pastures. The people we met were friendly but the point of the holiday was a getaway, and that it was. The cottage had every comfort and was cozy, especially on a rainy day (we were in Scotland, where it rains!). The conservatory was great in the morning and rain, but bright on a sunny day as the previous reviewer said. The wifi worked intermittently, but in speaking to the owner I found that they have now ordered satellite internet as the performance of the existing broadband has been worse than useless. Everything else was well-planned and complete. We saw many of the sights -- Callanish mystical in the rain, the Harris mountains and beaches lovely in the sun, several lighthouses. The blackhouse museum was fascinating. The wildlife did not disappoint: we sighted eagles, buzzards and grey birds that may have been herons right out the balcony door. Alas, no otters. All in all, a great escape. We'll return to see more of Lewis and Harris!"
