Troutbeck is near the famous Lake Windermere but set further away from its banks than nearby Bowness-on-Windermere and Ambleside. However, it is still within close enough reach to enjoy the wealth of water-based activities on offer here. There are cruises on offer and swimming is popular in the summer on quieter stretches. Away from the water, you can soak up the magic of the Lake District and its unspoilt vistas straight from your front door. Lakeside walks offer a gentle alternative the challenging hills and fells.

"First off, it’s a tricky place to find. No house number or name sign, and badly written directions. (The road is opposite the pub not behind, and there is no telephone box...). The place itself is nice enough if dated, a word of warning though, while it would sleep 6, 2 of the bedrooms are mezzanines to the lounge so there wouldn’t be much privacy, and you’d all be sharing a single bathroom. The communal area is pretty, and heated by a big log-burner which is lovely. A small shame that the glass doors look out to the owners home across the driveway, but you can shut curtains over it to maintain the illusion of privacy. The setting is perfect, just a 5min drive from a great farm shop, and 10mins from the base of Blencathera. So why not recommend the place? Honestly, based on the advert and it fell short of the billing... and that dashed our expectations of of a week away in a secluded idyllic cottage."

"S58068 has the potential to be a great holiday cottage. However we were greeted by the owner with a “don’t do this-don’t do that” attitude. This made us feel unsettled through our week. The fixtures and fittings needed updating, especially in bathroom and kitchen. Usually, owners provide a welcome pack of basic tea, coffee etc on arrival, not this owner. The linen was stained and worn, crockery was chipped and dirty we had to wash kitchen utensils and cookery again. Convector heaters in the bedroom only one heater worked the other one had it wires cut off. The washing machine had mould growth in it we were unable to use it. On a positive note the views from the garden looked towards Blencathra."

"Location excellent and could not fault the owners welcome however the accommodation itself was a little tired and in need of some modernisation considering the cost. Points of note, bathroom very small and prone to getting damp, exaggerated by a broken extractor fan , no tumble drier , cutlery was dirty on arrival , tv very small and no wi fi signal so researching local area etc difficult to do other than leaflets. Local area excellent, only a short drive to Keswick and the proper Lake District itself, Aira falls, Helvelyn and Honister Slate mines just some of the highlights. We would definitely return to this area again, stunning scenery and great pubs !"

"We had a very pleasant stay. The location is ideal for visiting the major summits of the Northern Lakes. The cottage was very cold when we arrived and took over 24 hours to warm up but was fine after that. The operation of the shower was very erratic and could be potentially dangerous. The mattresses on the beds were rather soft. A larger TV and wifi would be desirable future additions. There are lots of excellent pubs in the vicinity. On balance we would be happy return, particularly as we were able to arrange a Monday to Monday booking. This flexibility is not typical of many owners/agencies."

"The fridge is falling apart. The ice box door falls off when you open it. There is no glass shelf over the salad box. Two pairs of wall lights didn't work. Had to read by torchlight. The double bed springs could be felt through the mattress, so had to use single beds instead. Sofa and chair extremely uncomfortable Two dining chairs were unstable. General appearance outside was needing of a good clean. Filthy windows. Overall extremely disappointed with the quality of this lodge. Desperately needs updating and modernising. Would definitely not stay again or recommend to anyone."
