"To say that we were dismayed when we arrived is an understatement; we could not believe that anyone could give this cottage 4 stars and a 'gold award'. Beware - the photos are incredibly misleading. The cottage is damp, dusty and smelly throughout. Blinds are ill-fitting, covered in mildew and dead insects and some of the bedding was torn with holes in. The 'master bedroom' appears to be some kind of disused office, with dusty, 3 D maps in glass cases and empty filing cabinets. The bed head board was covered in dirt and not even attached to the bed, so that it rattled. When pulled out, the filth behind it was revolting. There was no 'welcome pack', as advertised. Having driven for 6 hours we could not even make a cup of tea and had to set out again down the track which is difficult to access(beware if you don't have a four wheel drive). We were only left two dishwasher tablets, half a toilet roll and no bin liners. The attic 'bedroom' is simply a very a stuffy attic with two sponge mattresses on the floor, not in any way like the photos suggest, and had a very unpleasant smell. Several things were broken, including a large cupboard door missing in the kitchen. There is no shower (4 star???) and the shower head over the bath was broken. The towels smelt nastily of damp when they were used. A washing machine was meant to be available was this was not the case. Packets of condiments left out in the kitchen were empty and out of date. The log burner had not been cleaned for some time so was not useable. To add insult to injury, the owner had left a large piggy bank, inviting tips!!"

"We needed somewhere near Hastings for 4 nights, so one of the family could get to nearby Hospital for work placement over half term. S13950 was OK - a bit dated in decor but comfortable; chilly downstairs (bedrooms and bathrooms), warm upstairs (in sitting room/kitchen); would have been useful to zone the thermostat, so the bathrooms downstairs could warm up and keep towels dry without overheating the living space upstairs. It was helpful to be able to bring our pet (dog) and good walks all around for him. Disappointed that the owner didn't bother come and make him/herself known to me during our 4 night stay. Felt rather odd walking into and around a property without any introduction to the owner. Apparently someone did come and talk to my son when I was out, but I would have expect them to come and address the adult in the party. Also I tried to phone before we arrived to find out about whether towels were supplied, as I couldn't see that on the website, but nobody called me back. The kitchen was well equipped. Would have liked one sharp knife though. Also, think the cooker extractor could do with a new filter and de-grease. Otherwise it was very clean when we arrived, which was great."

"The cottage has everything you could possibly need for a self catering property, even board games and a selection of dvds. We were disappointed that the pool was not in use as it should have been available until September, we left on 1st, however the weather was not really suitable for using an outdoor pool. The other minor irritation was the shower it was either scalding hot or freezing. the beach was a lot further than we had anticipated so we elected to drive, good location for visiting Rye, Hastings and Camber Sands and the New Inn serves really good food and has a nice walled garden.we enjoyed our stay but would not return with our grandchildren as it is a very old property with steep stairs and has very little insulation which means you can hear everything which is not great with young children also the bathroom is downstairs. The girls loved there stay but were disappointed about the pool. It would be ideal for me and my husband on our own."

"A beautiful property but was let down by a few things :-1) Damp. The property had several plug in air fresheners covering up a musty smell. Clothes in the wardrobe smelled musty & felt damp.2) Bed in the master bedroom was ridiculously hard. The owner said it was an orthopaedic mattress. If it is, it's the worst one we have ever slept on. We swapped rooms with our son and the 2nd bedroom single beds were much more comfortable.3) The tennis court had a lot of moss on it and was dangerous to play on (nothing like the photograph on your website)4) The fishing lake was so overgrown it wasn't possible to fish comfortably.5) The lawn hadn't been cut for several weeks and was very overgrown in places.Overall, we were very disappointed with this property, no way does it justify a 4 star rating and we therefore feel it is overpriced compared to the many other holiday properties we have rented over the years."

"Quirky cottage in fab location with stunning views to Rye. Cottage itself suffers from a down stairs bathroom off the kitchen , and bathroom door right by cooker!Kitchen basics all there but very squashed if more than 3 people stayed.Bathroom clean but dated , shower poor, and no where to dry towels unless heating on. Lounge suite tired and a little uncomfortable.Lovely gas fire though. Bedrooms small but pleasant, spotlessly clean , and very comfortable beds. Wooden floors and stairs mean any walking about was heard throughout, ditto for conversations. If all of the above negatives are okie, for a family with young children rather than 2 couples or more, than cottage fine, Winchelsea quaint."
