"S22916 is an extremely spacious cottage on the Mar Estate, in the remote hamlet of Inverey. You have 5 toilets and three showers and at least of two of the latter were strong and hot - very much welcome! There were only 5 of us, which actually made the place seem a bit empty, with the cavernous kitchen feeling positively hollow even when we were all in it. The beds were OK, neither especially good or bad. We fired up the stove in the lounge but it never seemed to throw out much heat, which would have been welcome given the sub-zero temperatures outside. The DVD player is duff. The electric heaters kept the rooms at a decent temperature despite the yard-long icicles forming outside, but the kitchen and some of the other rooms were often on the cool side. The internal furnishings are of a adequate, though not of a high standard and some small touches would have made all the difference. For example, there was no salt, pepper, cooking oil or washing powder on the property, so we had to buy it all. Inevitably you use a tiny fraction in a week and you end up leaving it behind, as well as the inconvenience of having to go out and get it in the first place. Easy to fix. It very much feels like a working rather than a luxury cottage. Whilst the important bits were clean when we arrived, germophobes won't appreciate the carpet in one of the ensuite bathrooms. It turns out that there is a cottage guide folder, but as it was tucked away on the book shelves next to sofa, I only found it near the end of our stay. It would be nice if it was a bit more comprehensive.Be aware that you're unlikely to get any mobile phone reception or data in the cottage, and we were unfortunate enough to lose the broadband on our second day. Exceptional weather conditions meant that the OpenReach guy didn't manage to get out to fix it. Obviously this shouldn't be something that everyone experiences, but bear in mind that the property's internet is pedestrian at best - you can forget streaming films or listening to music. We very much had an old-school time of it, and that was OK, if somewhat inconvenient for checking weather and avalanche forecasts. I certainly wouldn't plan to do any work there. There are cafes with free WiFi and 4G in Braemar, which is a 10 minute drive.Inverey is quite remote, so if you're going there in winter, like we did, a 4x4 is strongly recommended. Estate employees plough up and down the road regularly, but there's only so much they can do, and you'll appreciate the extra traction. Also be aware that the Cairnwell pass (one of two roads that connect Braemar to the outside world) is often closed in heavy snow, and driving the eastern way adds at least 90 minutes onto your journey if you're going South. There were masses of deer around, so keep your dog under control and take some tick removers if you're going in the warmer seasons. We had fairly limited interaction with the caretaker/estate staff, but they were warm, friendly and helpful when we did, if occasionally somewhat hard to contact because of the lack of mobile signal.Overall I'd give S22916 a solid 7/10 for walkers/MTBers who want access to the central and southern Cairngorm Munros, those who are doing shooting or fishing or folk who want to get away from it all . I wouldn't recommend it as a base for exploring the tourist attractions of this part of Scotland, because a.) there aren't that many and b.) you're going to have a lengthy drive for many of them.In our experience it was a quiet and peaceful place where those who are happy to entertain themselves will feel content. I would stay there again if I had a larger party and would go there forewarned."

"Our family had a wonderful holiday in this beautiful house. The layout, comfort and beauty within, truly enabled a feeling of togetherness for us all. My father particularly liked his stunning en suite room, whilst my favourite was the open plan kitchen/lounge (felt distinctly 2 rooms too - amazing) The decor is very tasteful and the owners have thought of every little thing to make a difference to your holiday. Absolutely everything you could possibly need within a holiday home kitchen and separate utility room is there. You will never be bored in Ballater, with an abundance of walks/cycle trails on doorstep, cafes, restaurants, couple of pubs etc. If you’re a group of up to 8, looking for a holiday house in Ballater, I honestly wouldn’t look beyond this one. It was everything we hoped for and more and we’ve been visiting Ballater for many many years. We were a family of 8 with maximum of 6 staying at any one time. We were so so lucky to get this New Year cancellation week - it was very special for us and meant to be. Sincere thanks to the owners for sharing their lovely holiday house with those of us wise enough to book it."

"We loved S22918. In 30 years of 'cottaging' in Scotland, Bearberry is right up with the very best we have experienced. We usually book remoter locations, but this very quiet residential setting proved peaceful yet within easy walking distance of all amenities. The walks straight from the door were delightful, perfect for our dog. The bungalow is freshly decorated, well furnished and the owners have upgraded the interior to a high standard. The central heating is very effective and the wood burner adds an extra option to cheer up winter evenings. I have marked the cottage down from 10/10 on only one category, value for money, because mid and high season prices are very high compared with other properties we use. However, the visitor book shows that this is no deterrent to others. Bearberry won't disappoint, that's for sure."

"S22905 is exceptionally comfortable and warm, clean and well maintained, very spacious (3 lounges!), has excellent facilities and equipment, and a large area of off-road parking. It’s dog-friendly with a fully fenced garden. Ballater is well equipped with high quality shops within 5 minutes walk of S22905 (baker, butcher, grocer, hardware, outdoor, books, Co-op). There are several good restaurants and bars where we enjoyed a whisky and beer tasting festival one evening. There are too many places to visit and activities to do in a week, whether you like walking, castles, trains, golf, fishing, cycling (and more). The autumn fungus forays were some of the best we’ve been on. S22905 is highly recommended, it reads well in the brochure and is even better on arrival. We’ll be back if others haven’t booked up first. Oct 2011. "

"We’ve just had our second holiday at S22918 and it was our best holiday ever. S22918 is so gorgeous that I could just move in tomorrow. I don’t feel as relaxed anywhere else in the world as I do here. I’m even more relaxed here than I am at home! Our little feline was totally chilled out too!Every thing you could possibly need is already here. Excellent DVD and book libraries. Games galore for all ages and local area information that could keep you busy forever. Bird watching, squirrel spotting and admiring the mighty Craigendarroch from the comfort of the patio in the delightful garden. I’m sure it’s somewhere that everyone can fall in love with. I know I have. I can’t wait to return."
