What our customers are saying about our Holiday Cottages In St. Day To Rent.

Mr Lightfoot - verified booking

"We have rented a number of properties in Cornwall since the 1990's and this is the worst experienced. I had a sinking feeling when we arrived in the locality of the property as there were a number of incomplete buildings and old scrap vehicles dotted around. I was born and bred in Cornwall and am conversant of the ways of some of the Cornish but this was pushing it. The track to the property was very rough in parts badly in need of a few bags of hardcore. There were overgrown brambles along it which I trimmed the following day to avoid scratching my car with cutters I borrowed from my family who live in Cornwall. The frontage of the property did not match the photo's on the website. There was a couple of hanging baskets and a few plant pots with long dead plants in them. Where the cottage joined to the house there was a tank with hoses and various bits and pieces including a bleach bottle scattered around. Opposite the front door there was a wooden building with the gutter hanging off it. When the owner opened the front door to show us around she removed her shoes as if we were about to enter a palace. We could not have been more wrong. The first thing that hit you when you entered was the damp musty smell of a building not properly aired. The owners brief on the place was minimal, but she made a big play on saying that "the only thing that goes down the toilet is what comes out of you and the paper in the bathroom" because of the sceptic tank. Hardly appropriate language. Other than the usual parking rules she did not have much else to say. On inspection we were quickly dispirited on coming across the grubby stale smelling rug in the living room and similar stair carpet. There was a cobweb on the bathroom door frame which I quickly removed as I was already in trouble with my wife for booking this place. There was nothing homely about the place, the living room only had one picture in a corner of a map of Cornwall and that was it . A pathetic fireplace and the light switch was at the wrong end of the room, it should have been moved when the conversion was done. The bedroom was poorly lit, but the worst part was trying to sleep in the bed as it was so clammy even on a cool night. It had clearly not been aired properly as this place only has a minimal heating set up, there is no chimney flue for a proper fire. We got to the point of counting the nights down which we had to spend in this place and even considered moving in with my elderly father. My wife dropped a jewellery item in the bedroom one evening and she asked me to find it. When I was at floor level I could not help but notice the amount of fluff and dust under the dressing table and the bed..I even noticed a nail cutting! These areas had clearly not been cleaned properly for years, quite disgusting. The window frame adjacent to the stairs is black with dirt as are parts of the window in the kitchen. I write in the present tense as I am sure they were not cleaned after we left. The kitchen was described as being new, well it was once but not anymore. The oversized rubbish bin was shoved behind the kitchen door which is badly stained from being too close to the bin. Only a coat of paint will put this right. We soon decided to spend the minimum amount of time in this place and only prepared one meal there..a breakfast. We ate out every night, a first for us. We had the use of a beach hut in Falmouth which was just as well. I wanted to give the kitchen a sweep so I opened the cupboard in the entrance to find a dustpan and brush and found that area full of fluff, dust and even hair! This is clearly an example of people trying to operate a rental property on a shoestring budget. On going through the information in the property we found that if you wanted to use the washing machine you had to pay a pound for each wash and if you wanted the central heating on you had to contact the owners next door because that is where it is controlled from and there would be an additional charge ! None of this was mentioned in the website. We did not need to use the washing machine but that is not the point. The owner did come round on the forth night to ask if everything was o.k, it was my wife who answered the door and was non committal, as by this stage we were resigned that nothing much could be done to improve the situation, and we were only spending the minimum of time there. Apparently there was a garden area for us to sit in, we were not shown this on arrival and after seeing the rest of the place we did not seek it out. We still had a very good time in Cornwall with all the family and our trips and nights out, but even having to spend minimum time in this place did spoil it. We have taken some photos which we would like to send to you in a separate email if that is o.k. We will be reluctant to use your company in the future after this experience. We were on the A30 by 0600 on Saturday morning and have never been more grateful to spend a night in our own bed after that week. I know it will be difficult for you to carry out checks on your clients, but surely they need to have it in the back of their minds that you could show up one day during the turnaround."

"OK so TomTom didn't take me to the right address but it is actually easy to get to once you've found it. Some potholes in the unmade lane, but unless its a very low profile vehicle, taking it slowly causes no problems whatsoever. Its lovely and quiet day and night and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. We were a party of 5 + 7 month old & we loved it. After many many self-catering hols in the UK, Magpie's cottage is far superior to most that we have stayed at for comfort and facilities. Fantastic value for money. We are currently looking at available dates for 2018, hoping for 2 weeks! Things we were pleased with: good set of knives, toys & books, so much space, games room, good bathroom, large bedrooms, cot & highchair, towels & linen provided. Great communication from the owner. Loved the cream tea - thank you :) What we'd love more of: chopping boards, better wifi reception. Drive easily took 3 cars. Large garden and patio areas make for great outdoors area. Indoors there is a spacious games room, a separate dining room, large kitchen with table & chairs (so much cupboard space!), separate utility section (washer/dryer, dishwasher, sink, fridge etc). Rangemaster cooker, microwave, food mixer. All easy to use. Lounge area and separate large lounge. Large conservatory was too hot to sit in on our visit but ideal for drying laundry on the airer :) Upstairs there are 3 good size bedrooms, largest with ensuite sink & toilet. The family bathroom is downstairs, modern, with bath, separate double shower, sink."

- Mr Greene, August 2018 - verified booking

"Honest review... location wasn’t the best nothing really around apart from 1 pub (for local people) and a londis, closest supermarket about 20 minute drive each way. We did more driving than anything this last week nothing local that’s any good. Lodge itself. Jacuzzi was brilliant perfect for relaxing after a long drive everyday. Outside furniture seats just left out to ruin in rain which was disappointing. No bbq at the lodge, I think you had to request one from reception. No washing line of any kind to dry towels or bathing suits,(other 2 lodges do have one each) Living room/kitchen open plan good setup all modern appliances in kitchen all work as they should. Don’t expect to be able to put a lot in fridge only essentials. Comfy sofa in room and a single chair also tv with freeview reception goes quite a bit but your not there to sit and watch tv. Bedroom 1 3 quarter bed very comfortable little wardrobe and plenty drawer space. Bedroom 2 two single beds again comfy and enough storage. Shower room. Shower wouldn’t drain properly and had a leak. Toilet and basin as expected. Overall 6/10 was ok probably wouldn’t stop again as location too far from anywhere but that was my fault when booking not Sykes. Looking forward to our next holiday in Newquay with Sykes though."
