"We booked West Shieling as my wife is disabled and the fact that everything was on one level was essential. First impressions are of a modern well cared for holiday home. We found issues around cleanliness in that the cooker hood required a deep clean, we found several dirty towels in the linen basket in the bathroom and the pans provided were dirty and some required replacement. We needed a safety bath mat as parts of the shower area were slippy. We later found a bath mat under the dirty towels after we had purchased a bath mat ourselves. The double bed had a mattress that did not fit the base which led to the risk of minor injury getting into / out of bed. The information ring binder was incomplete. There was no mention of the non slip bath mat, and most importantly there were no manufacturer's instructions on how to use the electric oven which led to the oven breaking on 2 occasions. The oven was repaired once but on using the grill again the door jammed resulting in the glass breaking. Manufacturer's instructions for appliances are available on line and can be printed for use by guests. The owner's scribbled instructions were incomplete ie. when grilling do you leave the door open or close it ?The sporadic availability of the oven meant we had to eat out on more occasions than we had originally planned. The issues around the oven did take the edge off our break.Bins (stored) outside were overflowing as I think our stay was between bin collection weeks but we were still baffled as to why the grey bin (which was outside the back gate in the alleyway) was overfilled when we got there. We left the premises on the Sunday, one day earlier than planned. All in all, we still enjoyed the break and believe that with a few tweaks (more crockery, new pans and no request to strip the beds) and attention to detail in providing adequate information held centrally in the 4 ring binder, West Shieling would be a more attractive holiday home.We shall not be returning however."

"The location for us was perfect as the views from the garden and comfort of the cottage made for a very pleasant experience. The summer house in the terraced garden was an added bonus. We particularly liked the iron stove log fire with ample supply of fuel which made our stay very snug & cozy. A car is a must due to the cottage being located on a very steeep hillside. I could invisage risky conditions in the event of ice, as the road can be extremely wet after rain for a number of days as drainage is fast flowing down the steep road for couple of hundred metres until finding drains. Nonetheless with a car the location is ideal and as long as care is taken the cottage would be extremely cozy in winter. Thank you for providing your home for us to experience a lovely holiday. We would definitely like to return."

"The cottage was really lovely. It was a great size, really well laid out and was furnished and equipped to a very high standard. Everything was scrupulously clean. The spacious kitchen (especially with the utility room with a second fridge) and separate dining room made cooking Christmas Dinner for 8 people a pleasure. The absence of mobile phone signal was not a problem as a land line was provided and the WiFi worked extremely well. The setting is beautiful and "off the beaten track" but actually very close to Ulverston. There were 6 of us staying at the property but there was loads of space and it would still have been very comfortable with more people. I would certainly recommend this property."

"It is a well converted property, comfy beds and a really nice shower. What lets it down is the position on a housing estate, with no off road parking, and the lack of those extras that make a nice property something special. There was no hair dryer or corkscrew and the towels were a hand towel and small bath towel per person. Only one tee towel and a box of tissues with only one in it. Almost all properties we have rented in the past have supplied milk and a few basic foodstuff but there was nothing. Luckily we know the area so know where the late opening shops are as we turned up quite late. If you are a walker there is nowhere for wet or dirty boots and coats."

"Spent an unforgettable week, starting with the lovely owners who were very welcoming and helpful, even giving us a bottle of bubbly to help us relax! The house was great, two very comfortable bedrooms with fantastic views, a comfortable sitting room with a working fireplace, logs supplied! Great kitchen and bathroom with absolutely everything thought of. The garden was very pretty with fantastic views across the valley, could see the steam train going up and down, and the sunsets! The cottage was central in a great location, good walking all around, and a short drive from lots of lovely places; we loved it all."
