"This has been a very difficult review to make! We holiday rent approx. 7 to 8 places every year and I have never given a perfect 10 in any review. When choosing a place to stay, the location and local amenities are as they are and if you go to somewhere like Reay you don't expect too many local amenities, but beautiful countryside. This area has it in buckets, and the house is well located for the beach (nice walking distance, but could take car), and near enough to the A836 that you don't hear the traffic, but are soon on it.Now the main review! What a welcome, never have we been greeted so well. A superb salmon tea, with biscuits and fruit - and a dram of Old Poultney! As it was my birthday there was also a delicious chocolate cake. Ann took us round the house, explained where everything was and how it worked. We even loved that there was somewhere to dry out wet clothes and shoes - not that we needed it.The house is exactly as described, a bit 'higgledy piggledy,' and the two of us kept loosing each other, with the garden and all the rooms! We loved it all, especially what we called the garden room, where we tended to eat if we weren't out in the garden. The conservatory was not used often as it was so warm we were out in the garden. The beds were extremely comfortable and cosy. The shower was brilliant. The kitchen extremely well furnished with lots of equipment, all top quality. The best place we have ever stayed in, and if it weren't for the 600 mile trip to get there we would visit again this year! Highly recommended."

"The main reason for us not returning, which is such a shame as there was so much that we did enjoy was that the entire stay was ruined for everyone in my party by the very poor quality of the mattresses and lack of sleep that resulted from this. The bed linen was also of a below average standard, not in keeping with the overall appearance of what should be a luxury house. There was a problem with lighting in two of the bedrooms on the first floor, both main lights not working and only one bedside table lamp usable due to a lack of plug sockets. The jacuzzi was a lovely treat but again ruined by the lack of care and attention. The frame surrounding it had broken and missing panels in the roof, the side curtains were missing and there was no lighting in that immediate area making getting in and out quite hazardous. While we appreciate that we were staying during the Christmas/New Year period, and normal services can be disrupted, it was not a very pleasant sight to be left with the overflowing rubbish bins and recycling items from the previous guests festivities.I hope the owner takes these comments on board as most of these things are easily rectified to ensure that further guests get to have what should have been for us, an enjoyable stay in a grand house."

"This house looks amazing on the website, however we found several issues with the house and have photographed these. The front door is the only one with a lock on it,the internal door has evidence of locks previously being on it but these appear to have been removed.Inside the house there is electric plugs not attached to the wall. The hot tub is missing most of its roof and the side panels/curtains missing also rendering it unusable if raining. There was a small hole and crack in one of the front windows. In the back garden there is a stank with a space at the side of it,the dog got her paw and leg caught in this. The bedding was of poor quality and never really fitted the beds particularly in front downstairs bedroom. In the middle floor there was constant debris coming down the chimney and into the bedroom. The top floor was extremely cold despite hall radiator. On the top floor also there is evidence in bedroom that roof has been leaking. The bathrooms were all nice, kitchen was nice and well equipped. We went here as a family with two children aged 8 and 6 also a 10 month old,2 dogs and 8 adults, whilst the house certainly has plenty of room I don’t believe it’s safe for children or should be marketed towards families."

"The very best holiday cottage we ever had in twenty years. Very kind owners, very god in giving ideas for the area. We felt at home in the house! Such beautiful rooms, it seemed like Laura Ashley had decorated it. And so clean, we felt very well. We never before had so much space to put things into, in the bathroom, in the sleeps. And the kitchen is so good and lovely, and the bathes, too! And I liked especially the conservatory/winter garden with it's three very comfy places to sit and read. The living room was good to sit in and watch TV but there was also a TV in the dining room by the kitchen. And there is an extra room for the washing machine where you can dry and store dirty clothes before washing. Everything in the house is well done and fine. We could place our bicycles in an extra room. The car had it's place near the house. The house may seem small from outwards but it is really a jewellery case inside! Our number one in Scotland! This is a cottage made with love and not only for the money."

"We had a lovely stay in The Knowes. Lovely and helpful owners, wonderful, very complete and comfortable cottage, very clean as well. Everything you need (and more) is there. There was a wonderful meal (with wine and drams) waiting for us on arrival. Weather was not always kind to us during our stay, nevertheless there were lots of things to do and see. There's a shop in Reay which has a lot - if you want more Thurso is not far away. All and all we really recommend this cottage to everyone who wants to stay in the North of Scotland! We were really sorry to leave the house and we hope to come back! So if we ever plan to be in the neighbourhood, we know where to find you!Thank you for everything, Ann and Jim!! (We will send you photos as soon as they are ready!)"
