Mr Hincks - verified booking

"The cottage was well appointed and of course in a fantastic location with views and access to spectacular scenery. Overall we had an enjoyable stay but there were niggles and annoyances; we would return again but better prepared through these experiences. The oil-heating system I suspect was a bit past its prime and not fit for purpose; the three ancient-looking radiators in the main room barely took the edge of the cold; we fared better in the bedroom, much more cosy, but only because the owners had thoughtfully supplied electric blankets plus there was double-glazing fitted. On this basis it felt more a spring, summer and autumn property. There was an large open fire in the living room and again the owners had thoughtfully supplied a large basket of wood, firelighters and newspaper - but no matches. I didn't fancy a pitch-black drive along miles of chicaning single track to Pooley Bridge and had to wait for the day after. It would've been useful for the literature to suggest we bring a box or be told this when we contacted the owner/agent about when we expected to arrive. An axe would also have been useful as the wood - and most wood then bought from surrounding villages and B&M and B&Q in Penrith - were Sequoia chunks. I ended up like Mr. Universe bellowing and wafting the grate for hours getting the fire bed hot enough and able to then devour the large chunks on its own. Once the fire was going it was great in the living room but an axe would have been useful to chop these into more manageable pieces initially. We had a RCD blow taking out random, unrelated appliances like the kettle, fridge, Sky Box, TV and WiFi. The info folder made no mention of the fuse box's location; we could not contact the owners as there was no 'phone signal and of course no WiFi. After twenty minutes of 'Hunt the Fuse Box' I eventually located it behind a door with no handle at the back of the living room managing to get a finger in and prise it open. I found in fact no RCD had blown but got power back by pushing the test switch up (...?!). There were one or two other things but it'll just sound like moaning; it was just little, overlooked things that irritated but finally didn't dampen a good stay."

"Aira Cottage was a fantastic place to enjoy stunning Ullswater and the Lake District. Location wise you wont find better, you cross your driveway and you are on Aira Force. Overall we loved our break, but there are some areas we suggest need addressing. General cleanliness wasn't brilliant. The areas you see and use seem clean, but move the sofa 1" and you'll notice dust and books from the shelves (not any more as we hoovered and put them back). The window sills collected dirt and dead flies - the cottage suffers with flies full stop. We assumed its due to the location of the water, but we had half a dozen on the ground floor permanently. Spot lights in the kitchen hanging out of their sockets, door handles in places either not closing or in need of replacement. A very polite sign advising of the rules of the cottage - no dogs on the carpet, however this is contradicted in the guest services book as this states no dogs in the bedrooms. I understand not all dog owners are as careful of other peoples property but there was no fear of our dogs making the carpet any dirtier than how we found it.The upstairs barn / games room area still has the leaves from the autumn brushed into a lump. The patio set could do with an update. If we were paying £200 for the week I wouldnt moan at a cheap plastic table and chairs, but they are dirty and flimsy - there's a tatty old parasol in the outbuilding you can use if you wish, we gave it a miss. The property needs a little bit of love. It wouldn't take much to make this place stunning."

"We were exceptionally fortunate with the weather which made it a really enjoyable holiday all round. Would recommend. However if anyone stays who wants to be 'close to amenities' then this isn't for them as it is quite remote. Keen walkers will love it though as there are plenty of walks from the front door. Look out for deer and red squirrels. The cottage benefits from all the basic requirements - hot water, heating, wood burning stoves, an extremely well equipped kitchen (although there were no oven gloves and only 2 or 3 decent teaspoons). The heating/ hot water controls have a mind of their own - the hot water never came on when it should have done so we had to keep setting it to constant and then turning it off when we didn't need it. As there were only 2 of us plus dog we lived in the cosy dining room - and never used the lounge. We couldn't work out how to use the TV and there were no instructions - nice to have a rest from the TV anyway! We left the biscuits and (long life) milk provided as we came with all our food - a nice touch might have been locally produced biscuits rather than Viennese creams! A flick round with a feather duster wouldn't go amiss but other than that the cottage was clean and welcoming."
