"The photo used gives the impression that the house with the balcony and the garden in front is Highgate Cottage. It is in fact the owners house and Highgate Cottage is to the right, in the photo with no balcony. The garden is in front of the owners house. There is no DVD player and use of Wi-Fi is not made available although there is a very good signal. The "utility room" is between the cottage and the house so, to use the washer, dryer and allocated top drawer of the shared freezer, it is necessary to go downstairs, through the double bedroom to the outside, along a bit and unlock the utility room. This is pretty inconvenient if you want to get some ice cream or some frozen peas out and there is no freezer compartment in the cottage fridge. Central heating comes on ( during a wet mid-October two week period ) from 7-9am and 4-7pm. For an extra hour boost it is necessary to go and ask the owners or use a fan heater which is noisy and blows up dust. The owners went away for 3 days in the middle of our stay, leaving a large notice telling us not to touch the central heating controls. My husband is not very mobile and we both found it quite cold at times. Access from the outside is straight into the double bedroom which may not be suitable for some people. We went to speak to the owner when a bulb in the bedroom blew and the lighting failed, causing the trip mechanism to cut in. She reset it and promised to get a replacement bulb for it and two others, one in the living room and one on the stairs. She replaced the bedroom bulb but the other two were still not replaced after 10 days, when we left. At no time did the owners come to check if all was OK or even to say goodbye when we were packing up. We found it quite unfriendly."

"The apartment is basically of a good standard with good mod cons, equipment and furniture (sofa and chair now becoming uncomfortably saggy). There is an excellent user friendly kitchen, a modern bathroom with Jacuzzi bath and a comfortable bedroom. The property was very dusty and dirty, especially the bathroom, but the owner says that his regular cleaner is off sick so hopefully this is a temporary problem. The location is good in that it is centrally placed to benefit from the plentiful cafes, shops and restaurants but is also opposite a very noisy night club, though this was only a problem on the first night. More of a problem is that the apartment below is also a holiday let which allows dogs and, being an old building, the sound insulation between floors in non existent, so we were woken most nights by their barking dog. A real plus is the free parking permit which not only enables you park nearby (100 yds) but also applies to many other car parks in the Lakes. If you are booking through Cottages 4 You be aware that the bed is a standard double, not a king sized as stated"

"We stayed here for a long weekend and was a short notice booking so that my brother and partner could do the 15k Keswick challenge and we had a fantastic weekend. The cottage exceeded our hopes. It is one of the cleanest, comfortable and well equipped cottages we have ever stayed in with wonderful views from the front window. Being an upside down arrangement, Front access was through the main double bedroom, which we did not find to be a problem at all, but there was a back door access into the main hall as an alternative. There were chocs, wine, flowers, milk and free wifi with lots of books and magazines with information about the area, all very welcoming and thoughtful. There were plenty of places to eat at Pooley Bridge, 5 minutes down the road, and whilst the cottage is in a peaceful location, it is well sited for easy access to the Lakes and there were walks to do from the cottage. I think the owners have put a lot of thought and effort into this cottage and were very pleasant and helpful. I would definately recommend the cottage and hope to visit again."

"We were let down by another company so this was a last minute booking & the area was busy so we were lucky to find somewhere. The friendly owner greeted us on arrival and was very helpful . The cottage itself just didn't feel very clean , all the kitchen equipment we used had to be washed . The bathrooms were grubby. The kitchen table was squeezed into a tiny space and it was virtually impossible to get 6 people around the table without climbing under the table . The basket of logs provided for the windburner was damp so we had to buy more. We returned from a Lakeland trails run at 3pm and the heating & hot water was off and there was no way of adjusting the boiler . However the beds were comfortable and the location excellent ! I would highly recommend the nearby Wilson's Arms for great food and friendly staff. Overall a good stay but not worth the price we paid compared to other very high end properties we have stayed in previously ."

"Given that this is the third time in 18 months that I've stayed in this property it's not difficult to draw your conclusions! It's a well maintained property with a good spec. The location within Ambleside is really central, and though some might gripe about the neighbouring pub across the road, the noise is all relative, the latest you'd hear anything from it would be just after 11pm most nights. I had no problems with that. The location for the apartment itself being in Ambleside means it's a really good location to explore both the southern Lakes and the north of Cumbria should you so wish, whilst if the inclination is to hunker down for a day or two in Ambleside there is enough within the town to keep you occupied. Cannot recommend enough. "
