"Ettrick cottage is a wee hidden gem. If you are looking for pure fresh air, beautiful scenery and a tranquil setting this cottage is perfect. When we arrived the sun was blazing (-3) the daffodils and well attended seasonal planters at the front door set the twee feeling for this cosy home for the easter weekend. The cottage is well equip with everything you could need for a family break away. The logs ready for the log burner, beds ready and loads of fresh towels. The views from the front of the cottage across the hills are nothing but stunning, the sunset is breath taking. We took binoculars and the kids were fascinated for hours watching the sheep, horses and snow coming down on the mountain tops. We are a horsey family and so being surrounded by fields of horses, sheep, and farm life - heaven. The walk to Ettrick lake took an hour, its only a mile away but there is so much wild life to take in the time just slips away. Once at the lake theres only the bird call for noise, if you can call it noise and maybe the odd mountain biker for company! The cottage is perfectly located to venture to the Solway coast, Glasgow or if your after a total escape simply park the car up and just absorb the nature around. Morton Castle is stunning, if your into photography this site is a must and so worth the walk or drive into Thornhill. Lee the owner is so helpful and friendly, we couldn't have asked for anything more. We will be back."

"The location is absolutely unique. We were were privileged to have access to the observation which is attached to the house, from which we could look across the Solway Firth to the Lake District. At dawn and dusk we watched up to 20,000 barnacle geese filling the sky, looking for morning grazing and evening roosting sites. The sound of the geese in the air is wonderful.. Add to this, the whooper swans, freshly arriving from Iceland landing the pond in front of the conservatory and badgers outside the conservatory in the evening. The house itself is warm and comfortable with good facilities. Attention has been paid to detail. There is a cafe on the reserve which is open in the daytime. If you want an urban experience, this is not the place for you. It is fairly remote, but with a car, you can visit the hometown of Burns or the handsome caerlaverock castle and beyond. There is a walk along the marsh to the castle. It is a privilege to be able to stay in the heart of a nature reserve. We did have beautiful weather so it was very easy to be out of doors."

"When we booked I informed the owners we wouldn't arrive until late on the first day, this was not a problem and they even left the lights on so we could find the cottage in the dark! The long dark windy roads from Dumfries were scary at times and we couldn't use the sat nav for the last part of the trip! The directions given were very helpful but we felt that they should state the actual distance from Dumfries (A76) to the turning for Loch Ettrick which would have helped in the dark! The views from the cottage are fabulous and waking up to them every morning was a bonus! The road to the cottage from the A76 can be treacherous if a vehicle comes the other way and we had a few near misses during our stay! We would recommend driving very slowly which isn't always the case for the locals!!Lee was very helpful when the shower stopped working and had it fixed asap."

"Lovely week long stay at Ettrick cottage. Plenty of room for the four of us and a dog. Beautiful quiet location surrounded by fields with sheep and horses, lovely views to wake up to but not too far from the local village of Thornhill which has some lovely cafes and pubs and two convenience stores. Cottage was very clean and really well equipped. The garden was completely enclosed and secure for a dog which for us is the highest priority when booking a cottage. The owner was very nice and helpful. Would definitely stay there again."

"the cottage its self is quite small but also very nice and cosy. the main problem for us was the traffic thundering down the road outside the bedroom window at all times of the night. This is out of control of the owners obviously, but its not helped witht the fact the windows are old drafty sash windows that are single glazed. the cottage was nice and warm and the shutters on the windows are very nice and quaint too. over all a good cottage to stay in."
