What a fabulous location! This spacious and delightfully restored terraced holiday cottage was originally built in the Victorian era for the now closed Oakeley Quarry, which was the largest slate quarry in the world. The cottage has a good sized living area, a warming wood burner for chilly nights, and a small patio for enjoying the sunny weather. Just opposite the cottage is the Llechwedd Slate Quarry, which is where the 21st-century entrepreneurs have established some fantastic adrenaline attractions! Zip World Titan is the world’s largest zip wire zone, with three quadruple zip wires enabling you to fly over the slate quarry enjoying the view (weather permitting). Underground, in an old slate cavern the size of St Paul’s Cathedral, is Bounce Below, where you can bounce on trampoline nets and slides to your hearts content. There’s also the Stiniog Downhill Mountain Bike Trail – great for mountain bikers.
To learn a little of the history of the area, no visit would be complete without a visit to the Deep Mine at Llechwedd to discover what life was like for the Victorian slate quarrymen. The town of Blaenau Ffestiniog itself is ¾ mile away and also provides one end of the famous Ffestiniog Railway, where you can enjoy refreshments at your seat on the spectacular journey behind a steam train as the line twists and turns on the journey down to the coast at Porthmadog. You can break your journey at Minffordd Station and visit the quirky Italianate village of Portmeirion designed by Sir Clough Williams Ellis. Porthmadog itself has a small harbour and the lovely beach of Black Rock Sands at Morfa Bychan which stretches for miles! From the cottage, travel over the top of the Crimea Pass to Dolwyddelan and its castle. Built by the Welsh Princes in the 13th century, Dolwyddelan Castle was the birthplace of Prince Llewelyn ap Iorwerth – known as Llewelyn the Great. There are also some delightful walks in Dolwyddelan – in the Gwydyr Forest, to the summit of Moel Siabod (2860ft) or in the hidden valley of Cwm Penamnen. A little further on is the pretty village of Betws-y-Coed, with a range of outdoor shops and some lovely riverside walks. Blaenau Ffestiniog is a great central location from which to explore the area, and the lovely west facing coastline of Cardigan Bay and Harlech, the sleepy Llyn Peninsula and mighty Caernarfon Castle are all within easy reach. Beach 12 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant ¾ mile.

"Stayed here for WRC Wales, the cottage in great location for rally stages, however local amenities (shops/pubs/restaurants/takeaways) are not great but is Close Local attractions such as slate mine/zip line. The cottage itself is warm and cosy with a lovely multi-fuel fireplace, much needed with the Welsh autumn weather. There is good size dining table, and practical kitchen and large bathroom. Bedrooms were clean and well presented. Outside, the outlook to the rear of the property was not the best but functional nevertheless. Overall perfect for what we needed and great value for money."

"The cottage is well situated for seeing the area, it is a little isolated, you need to drive to reach any local amenities. The cottage is very nicely renovated, with a really large living space. I found the mattress in the main bedroom uncomfortable. There was absolutely nothing in the cupboards in the way of tea bags, salt, pepper sugar etc. Which always makes life just a little easier."

"The location of this terrace was ideal for our purposes, it being centrally located in the Snowdonia National Park area. The accommodation is situated by the slate quarry and close to the mountain bike and zip wire centre and is a short drive into town. It is possible to walk into town, but there is not a great deal to see or do in Blaenau Ffestiniog and it is a hike back up hill on the A470. By way of feedback points for the owner: the fridge is too small, we were a party of four so required more space for prepared food. Additionally, the electric shower was either scalding hot or too cold. The sofas were a bit tired and not that comfortable. These are minor points and did not affect our stay adversely."

"Clean property but the sofas are very old and torne the beds are weak might as well say bring your own beds or sleeping bag.the cottage provided no washing up stuff toilet rolles or proper cooking equiptments.Shops close very early so bring your own stuff or suffer till the next day.book else where as you will get a better property for the same or less if the price"

"Lovely cottage and would visit again. Thank goodness we had the fire as we had awful weather (Storm Hannah) hit us and the wheelie bins went awol! However we had the cosy cottage and the wood burner, plus Netflix to keep us amused! We also lost the key and the owners were very helpful and kind. Beds were really comfy as was the whole cottage and the kitchen well equipped.Just a minor little thing but some milk left in the fridge would have been nice on our arrival as after a long drive from Norfolk a cuppa was what we needed but we had to brave the weather to find a shop. Maybe this was just an oversight as everything else was fine."

"Fab holiday cottage with nice touches on arrival. Lovely and clean and had everything we could possibly need for a weeks holidayIdeal base for exploring North Wales.Fab family week away and the sun shone for us."

"Lovely homely cottage with a very well equipped kitchen. We did struggle to keep warm enough downstairs with the economy 7 heating when it snowed and had to ask for the complimentary wood/coal as these had not been provided, however they did arrive very quickly when requested. We would stay here again without hesitation in warmer weather."

"The property would not heat at all! Very old radiators and no extra blankets even! Bathroom is freezing, the small heater is ridiculous. Shower has no water pressure Location was good."

"A pleasant, warm, clean and well presented cottage in a good location to explore the local area, especially Snowdon and zip world/ bounce below.Positives :Beds comfortable, nice linen and towelsLog burner Large kitchen and bathroom, plentry of storage and space. No problem parking, even though it’s on the street outside. NegativesOdd collection of kitchen equipment, no large mugs, baking tray didn’t fit in the oven.Sofas need replacing as leather is peeling off.The lounge needs a lamp or better lighting as not really cosy, despite the log burnerDifficulty getting In Front door, key sticksAll in all would return and an ideal location. More of a 3 * than 4 * cottage but still a very nice short break"
    Becky ‐ 23 Oct 2018
"Lovely cottage. Clean, spacious and cosy when the log burner is on. Sofa’s need replacing as bits of faux leather get everywhere due to large scratches on them. Would definitely go again though."
