• History

This century old Bala accommodation has been a proud home to notable figures in the recent history of Wales, including its first proprietor Syr (Sir) O.M. Edwards - a Welsh academic and statesman who, from humble beginnings, became Wales’ first Inspector for Schools. Syr O M Edwards is widely credited and acknowledged for his efforts to encourage the common folk of Wales to learn and appreciate their own history, language and traditions, in English and in Welsh, and his efforts in this field, together with achieving the abolition of the ‘Welsh Not’ are acknowledged as having gone a long way towards saving the Welsh language at a time when it’s fate hung in the balance.

His son, Syr Ifan ab Owen Edwards became a statesman in his own right, and in 1922 established Urdd Gobaith Cymru, the National League of Youth in Wales, which is now mainly referred to as the Urdd. The Urdd is a Welsh-medium youth movement with over 1,500 branches and over 50,000 members. The Urdd organises activities for its members ranging from small-scale meetings to the Urdd eisteddfod which lasts for a week and is one of Europe’s largest cultural festivals. The Urdd is Wales's largest youth organisation.

Other well-known figures who have lived at this property include Elinor Bennett, an internationally renowned harpist and Mr Ifor Owen, a talented painter and illustrator. The present owner, who also grew up in Llanuwchllyn, has had great fun renovating the Grade II listed property and hope that you will enjoy its great, welcoming atmosphere.

      Fantastic family house
We booked as our family was visiting from Australia. Great that there was so much spac,e we all had room to spread out and the kids loved the chance to explore. We really liked being able to sit round the table together and enjoy real family time. There is also plenty to do in the area and entertain everyone.
