About this property

Beautiful C17th house packed with original features and plenty of modern touches, walk to village pub, overlooking countryside in area known as Lakeland of Wales. Perfect for a family rural getaway with a range of activities available in the local area.

This beautiful 17th century historic house is Grade II* listed and regarded as one of the best examples of an oak timber frame house in the whole of Mid Wales.

Talgarth is a stunning cottage bursting with character and original features yet with some modern aspects, such as a newly fitted bathroom with large walk-in shower, roll top baths (three of them!), WiFi and flatscreen TVs. Furnished and decorated with a tasteful combination of antiques and stylish furnishings, the cottage sleeps eight guests in four bedrooms.

The large welcoming kitchen has an oil-fired Aga in the inglenook fireplace (operational in the winter only). Please note the AGA cooker is vintage 1952 and not thermostatically controlled. This means it may not get as hot as a modern oven and may be more suited to an experienced AGA user than a novice. The kitchen is fitted with bespoke oak units, fridge, electric cooker, dishwasher, microwave, Welsh dresser and a breakfast table and chairs for six. A separate utility room houses a washing machine and freezer. The  magnificent triple aspect drawing room has a flatscreen TV, DVD player, antique furniture, original beams and a large open fire. There is a separate library with sofas, armchairs, a log burning stove in the inglenook fireplace, flatscreen TV and plenty of books. The atmospheric dining room has a dining table and chairs to seat eight.

Upstairs are four large bedrooms and three bathrooms, two of which are en suite. On the first floor is a master bedroom with a king size bed, sofa and some antique furniture; the en suite bathroom has oak panelling, rolltop bath, basin and WC. Also on the first floor is a family suite: a double bedroom and a twin bedroom; these are separate rooms, but have an interconnecting door if required by families with small children. The newly-fitted family bathroom has a rolltop bath, large walk-in shower, basin and WC. The fourth bedroom is on the second floor - a double bedroom with some restricted headroom and oak door leading to an en suite bathroom with bath, washbasin and WC.

The property is set in generous grounds, which are fully enclosed, comprising a large gravelled courtyard with plenty of off-road parking, a large lawn with flower borders and a separate cottage garden packed with colour in the summer months. To the front of the property is an authentic knot garden, which provides a perfect setting for the house. There are two barbecues for guests to use (bring your own charcoal) and garden furniture. Guests at Talgarth can also enjoy use of a separate garden room located across the courtyard from the main house. This has sofas, seating, a TV for video and DVDs only, and a dart board. This room is not heated and is intended for summer use. Talgarth is on the corner of two quiet lanes: both are no-through roads, with little passing traffic. The village of Trefeglwys, with its pretty church and a pub which serves food, is within easy walking distance.

A delight. I love old houses and this was fantastic. Ideal with dogs as secure enclosed large garden and courtyard. Easy base for both beaches and walks such as Cader Idris. Will be returning to this area next year.

Talgarth is an amazing place - it truly is like staying in a piece of history. I can honestly say none of us have ever stayed anywhere like it before. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring all its interesting nooks and crannies! Wales has looked stunning this week and obviously the weather has enhanced this enormously.

Thank you so much for letting us stay at beautiful Talgarth! We have enjoyed every moment and so have the dogs - we have walked around Hafren Forest with them and got some lovely photographs and they have loved this holiday. We will have lovely memories - Talgarth is so peaceful and relaxing and I fell in love with it the moment I saw it! Thank you once again.
