    About this property

Tyllwyd, so named after the grey stone used to build this Victorian, detached farmhouse, is wonderfully situated within 80-acres of farmland, which takes full advantage of the glorious hillside views of the Rheidol Valley or “Cwm Rheidol”. The farm now only grazes cattle and sheep, along with hay and silage crops taken from the fields throughout the summer. There is record of a Tyllwyd at this location dating back to 1716 and it may have been part of the Abertrinant Estate at this time. Most of the estate was sold in 1830 and the census from 1841 and 1851 show farmers with their families living at Tyllwyd along with their servants. A later census records lead miners and farm labourer’s residing at Tyllwyd. Only one other building survives from this period and this was the milking parlour, until 2003. The extent of the farm and the house today were probably established in the late 19th Century and was built with servants’ quarters that are now the bathroom and utility room. Servants continued to be employed at the farm and maybe as late as the 1940s. A dairy herd was established with 70 cows and the milking parlour was installed in one of the old 19th-century buildings. Potatoes were also grown and supplied the local chip shops in Aberystwyth. Dairy farming continued at the farm up until 2003.
The house has now been carefully and lovingly restored by the present owners, retaining period features, including original flagstone flooring, that gives the house its character. The spacious country kitchen, with a traditional clothes airing pulley, features a large range cooker with three ovens. The kitchen is open plan with the comfortable dining area so it’s the perfect place for a sociable gathering with friends or family. The living room boasts a cosy wood burner and there’s an adjoining games room to enjoy with table football and darts. On the first floor there are four light and airy attractive bedrooms, two with double aspect windows. The master bedroom features an en-suite shower room and walk-in dressing room. Outside, the large garden is great for children to enjoy and adults to appreciate sitting out with a glass of wine around the fire pit on colder evenings. The River Rheidol also runs through the owner’s lands, accessed via a 5-minute drive or 30-minute walk from the farmhouse. There is a good salmon and sea trout pool at this location and fishing permits are available through Aberystwyth Angling Association (there are steep slopes so the walk may not suit all abilities and access to the river is subject to rising water levels at certain times of the year).
Capel Bangor has a village shop and two pubs, one of which is a gastro pub, using local produce serving fine wines and their own real ales as it’s also home to the world’s smallest commercial brewery.
The Vale of Rheidol narrow gauge steam locomotive is the finest way to explore the stunning Rheidol Valley. Opened in 1902, the railway has been delighting passengers young and old for over a century and the train which begins in Aberystwyth calls at Capel Bangor station on its way to Devil’s Bridge where you can alight to visit the unique waterfalls that have attracted many thousands of visitors since the 18th Century, including William Wordsworth who wrote about the "Torrent at the Devil’s Bridge". Today, the Falls Nature Trail provides a unique opportunity to see this great natural feature in the Rheidol Gorge. Birds of prey such as red kite and buzzards are regularly seen soaring high above the valley floor and breathtaking views can be enjoyed by all.
Stay at lovely S73218 and enjoy this distinctive Welsh region with a thriving cultural identity. It’s perfect for a weekend break or a longer stay with award-winning beaches, sandy coves, sea cliffs, caves and wonderful ...

"A fabulous property for our family break. Our kids loved the space and various routes to run around the house! Rooms are all beautifully decorated and furnished. Great location fairly close to Aberystwyth and a lovely nature park just 5 minutes up the road. The best bit - amazing views from every single window. We’ll definitely be back"

"A delightful cottage. Thoughtful owners who took very good care of our needs. We had a lovely holiday at Tyllwyd and would definitely recommend to others looking for a retreat for a family. We would definitely return."

"A beautiful place to stay, loads of character, plenty of room for everyone, the owner welcoming and very helpful, splendid walks, great pub in the village. Can't recommend highly enough"
    Wendy ‐ 21 Sep 2018
"Within minutes of arriving at this beautiful farmhouse we felt at home. A generous welcome pack of local bread, butter, cheeses, tea, coffee, eggs and milk had been left by the owner together with a huge complementary basket of logs for the amazing fire in the living room. It was such a cosy place to stay, home from home, but also spacious and light. We loved the huge sash windows with beautiful views all round. The house was spotlessly clean and tastefully decorated in keeping with its character. All in all a great place to chill out and perfectly located with easy access to local amenities including the "pink pub" only five minutes walk down the road that does the most amazing food!"

"Lovely well equipped cottage in a beautiful setting. A little traffic noise from the main road but nothing much. Clean and warm, close to Aberystwyth for shops and the sea. Enjoyed watching red kites from the garde."
    Nathan ‐ 31 Aug 2018
"One of the best holiday lets we have stayed in, we had a great time with our family, there was plenty of room for everyone. It had a lovely cosy feeling. Great location for getting around. The kite feeding nearby was fantastic. We left a couple of things at the cottage and Bleddyn very kindly posted it back to us. Hopefully be back in the future."

"Fantastic second stay at this beautifully restored Welsh farmhouse. Stunning location surrounded by hills and red kites circling above. The standard of cleanliness is superb, a huge kitchen diner with good quality furnishings. Positives at the house are the space, quiet location, garden fantastic for children to play safely, fab showers and bathrooms, situation so close to Aber-15 mins. Best of all the secret picnic spot by the river. Our favourite day paddling and sitting in the shade by the beautiful river watching fish jump and the steam trains go by. Thank you for the inside info Bleddyn! Only giving a 9/10 for one reason- no downstairs wc. With young children and a Grandad with arthritis it was tricky at times! The drive is very steep and needs repairing but apart from that we highly reccomend this lovely farmhouse for a family holiday."

"Beautiful farmhouse and setting. Amazing views. Cows and sheep on the farm which the children really enjoyed. Every creature comfort you could want to make it feel like a home from home. Good base for visiting surrounding area. Owner very helpful. Large, spacious, property, well decorated, comfortable beds and very clean throughout."

"Lovely house and aspect, E at back, W at front. House clean and lovely welcome pack. Bleddyn came and explained where things were and operating heating etc, upon our arrival. Lots of room and the children loved the fact that there was more than one entrance to each of the downstairs rooms! Not may holiday rentals provide good towels, ondiments etc and even toilet rolls but Tyllwyd supplied all of these. 2 excellent, newly fitted bathrooms with lovely showers. All crockery, cutlery, utensils all supplied. A lovely cooker with extractor, good dishwasher and washing machine. As the weather was hot, the freezer was a welcome bonus. Wi-if actually works well.On our second day we noticed a wasp issue where they were attempting to build a nest between the house stonework. We gave Bleddyn a ring and he promptly attended and very adequately dealt with the matter. He even gave 2 follow up calls to ensure the problem had not returned so a big thank you to him for that. There is a steep 60 yard drive up to the house which was rather pot-holed so a little in-filling with ash/gravel would possible make it easier. Fine for land rovers but not for family cars. (A minor issue).I would have probably given an overall rating of 10 but for 2 things: 1. Flies! We couldn’t get rid of them in the kitchen/dining area no matter what we tried. We didn’t want to spray as that then falls onto work surfaces, food and anything else that is around. We would swat them, they are nifty little devils, but no sooner than we got rid of them, they were replaced. Instantly about 7 or 8. This may be due to the hot weather and being in a farming region but we have fields with horses and cows in around us at home without the fly problem. 2. My daughter was unable to sleep in the second king bed. (My husband and I had the main bedroom with ensuite). She ended up sleeping with her 2 year old daughter in the double bed after sleeping on the sofa for one night. She feels the king size bed was too hard for her. Her husband managed to sleep but did suffer back pain.I realise beds are very subjective and a matter of personal preference but this needed to be a review of our stay. The play area was greatly appreciated by the children, as was various items of play equipment supplied. My son in law enjoyed the bbq and fire pit too.My 2 year old grand-daughter was delighted to see the cows every day but was most concerned when they were “hiding” behind the BIG bush. We all loved the wildlife, Red Kites and lots of Grasshoppers including a pink one which, we discovered upon returning home, was an immature female and is unusual to see. We had lovely days at Borth Beach, travelled the railway to Devil’s Bridge where the boys, 6 and 8, drove a steam engine, and the Silver Mine. All only a short drive away. There are lovely walks in the area but our time was limited so unfortunately we didn’t sample them.2 suggestions I would make are, blackout linings on all bedroom curtains (a few had some but mostly not) and have sheets available for when it’s hot. The quilts are lovely but as we were experiencing such hot weather, they were too hot at night. The ability to put just a sheet on the bed would have provided lighter cover. We certainly enjoyed our stay at S73218 and would recommend to anyone. (Lookout for a few touching family history carvings and writings)"

"The elevated position is ideal, however the access through the unused derelict farmyard is very much in need of repair, it was to dangerous for the use of a mobility scooter, two of our party are pregnant and also found the access unstable. There has obviously been an issue with damp which is particularly visible in the lounge, whilst the dining / kitchen had areas thick with brick dust, bedroom doors which don't close..Overall in need of decorating to a much higher standard. Our impressions were of a property not well maintained, everything appeared to be last minute make do and mend."
    Hora ‐ 21 Jun 2018
"Our staying was wonderful, the cottage was so clean and supported with the any needs for cooking and making an amazing meals. The kids enjoyed the playing erea and the green outside. There were such amazing places near to the cottage. We did even ask the owner for another night to stay in the cottage and he has kindly agreed. For sure, we would love to come back again."
    Neil ‐ 5 Jun 2018
"An idyllic location, just right for an " Away from it all " break. The surprise welcome pack was a lovely touch. Perfect views from all aspects."
    Ray ‐ 16 Apr 2018
"The house was ideal for our purposes of having a family weekend together. The whole place was clean and tidy, the rooms spacious and well equipped. Our granddaughter enjoyed the space both inside and out. The views are fabulous all the way round, particularly if you make the effort to go to the picnic table at the top of the hill. We all agreed that we would go back again."
    Karen ‐ 6 Apr 2018
"The photos just don't do the property justice. There is so much space and it's incredibly well equipped.Seven of us stayed over Easter and never once felt on top of each other. The games room is a great plus when it's raining and the Red Kites were a constant source of delight for all of us. Beds comfortable, showers both great and the heating very effective. Lovely all round."
    Paul ‐ 24 Feb 2018
"We booked this house for a family vacation and had high expectations from what we saw on the website but can easily say that these were exceeded as soon as we saw the property. We were welcomed with a gift hamper of bread, cheese, tea coffee etc. and had a log fire left on for us which was a very thoughtful touch. The house itself is simply amazing and is full of character and perfect for anyone looking to get away from the hustle and bustle for a nice peaceful break. There is a steep but rewarding hill to walk at the rear of the house with an amazing view of the surrounding area as a reward for reaching the picnic bench at the top. The area is very remote but I found that to be very positive as it means it is very peaceful and if you do need shops etc then Aberystwyth is only a very short drive away. We were unlucky when we stopped that a lot of the local attractions were closed but that was no fault of the owners and more something to bear in mind for anyone looking to book at that time of year. All in all I cannot recommend this house enough, we were there for a week and the time flew by and did not want to leave as it had already created so many special memories for us all."
    Sarah ‐ 17 Feb 2018
"Such a beautiful farmhouse, well equipped, clean and comfortable. Beautiful location and friendly locals. Didn’t want to come home."

"Our group of eight ladies love this place, it's just perfect for us to get together, cook, eat and drink... & when we finally get out of our pyjamas we love walking out the door & up the hill! It's spotlessly clean, cosy & well equipped and the beds are ssooo comfy. We have been twice in the past few months & hope to go again soon, love it xx"
    Christophe ‐ 14 Jan 2018
"We rented the property for a weekend birthday celebration with family, we ate at the local pub which was welcoming and served delicious food on the Friday evening and then made good use of the farmhouse kitchen on the Saturday evening. The kitchen had everything we needed equipment wise and all in pristine condition. The whole house is very tastefully furnished and extremely comfortable. The log burner in the lounge made a cold January weekend warm and cosy, as did the soft furnishings in the bedrooms and very comfortable beds. The 'welcome basket' left for us by the owner was a lovely finishing touch and very much appreciated. On top of all that you have the beautiful countryside, spectacular views and owls to serenade you at night! Wonderful."
    Ann-Marie ‐ 4 Jan 2018
"Great cottage. Lovely welcome pack. Had everything we required for a new year party"
    Caroline ‐ 28 Dec 2017
"We had a great family get together at S73218 for Xmas and it worked brilliantly. Lots of space for six adults, the house is comfortably and tastefully furnished and, very importantly for a foodie Xmas, has a large well equipped kitchen. We loved the views from all the windows, lying in bed watching the red kites in the valley. It's set in a beautiful valley and there are walks straight from the door. The welcome pack was much appreciated and communications with the owner were easy and very clear. Can highly recommend Tyllwyd and will probably be back to explore the Rheidol Valley some more."
    janine ‐ 5 Nov 2017
"We rebooked as soon as we got home. This was perfect for our group of eight girl friends enjoying a weekend of just being together, sharing meals around the lovely big table and walking straight out the door and over the fields. It is beautifully furnished, immaculately clean and very well equipped"
    Paul ‐ 30 Oct 2017
"It's a wonderful holiday location in a great farmhouse. Would recommend it to everyone looking for a relaxing break in Wales. Beautiful countryside on your doorstep and the coast only a few miles away."
    David and Jill ‐ 13 Oct 2017
"A wonderful house set in a very peaceful and lovely part of Wales with super country views from all aspects both inside and out. The facilities and furnishings were excellent as was the heating arrangements. We have stayed in a number of cottages over the years, and for us, this ticked ticked all the boxes. The welcome pack was the best we have ever had."
    Mar ‐ 3 Oct 2017
"Thoroughly enjoyed our stay, would not hesitate to recommend to others. The welcome pack was a very nice touch with great quality products. The house is very comfortable and well equipped. Not wishing to be picky but would have liked a hairdryer.Very friendly, helpful owner."
    Lynn ‐ 29 Sep 2017
"Lovely farmhouse, clean, well equipped picturesque location a thoughtful touch was the welcome pack left for our arrival. The whole family of 7 adults 1 child and a baby stayed celebrating a special birthday and we could not have had a better time."

    "Fantastic !!!!!"
    Anji ‐ 18 Aug 2017
"A thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable holiday for a family of 5 adults, 2 children and 2 babies. Plenty of room in the cottage for us all to have our own space and time together. The cottage was well equipped, decorated to a high standard, and has lots of safe outdoor space. The owner has really thought of everything to make our stay memorable and totally enjoyable! And was available to assist with any questions/ queries we had. Plenty to see and do in the surrounding areas for whatever interests you have. A super well cared for cottage in a beautiful location 10/10"
    Geraldine ‐ 28 Jul 2017
"Relaxing stay in a well equipped house. Views stunning. Only two draw backs. First, a very steep drive with small potholes. First gear needed up and down. Second, we had to leave to come home!"
    Jane ‐ 21 Jul 2017
"Great property - very clean and comfortable, with lots of unexpected extras such as the wonderful 'welcome' items. Modern appliances, good quality furnishings, but with occasional 'period' extras to add to the character. We enjoyed watching red kites on the neighbouring hillside, and rabbits in the garden. The owner was very helpful - keeping us well informed on progress when there was a local powercut! Would certainly recommend the property as a good base for a family holiday, for exploring the area and for easy access to Aberystwyth. Also close enough to Snowdonia for us to climb Cader Idris!"
    Ann ‐ 14 Jul 2017
"We stayed at S73218 for a week in July. The house is lovely, well equipped if you want to cook, and very clean. Comfortably sleeps 8. Outside there's a big enough patch of grass for games and inside there's even a decent line up of books if you forget your own. Plenty of things to do nearby, but the house and surroundings are nice enough to go nowhere if that takes your fancy. I should mention that we were impressed by the welcome basket too.If I were nitpicking I'd say 1 more big pan would be a plan. Not serious enough for me to knock off any points though."
    Nick ‐ 26 Jun 2017

"S73218 delivered just what the doctor ordered. We spent a week on honeymoon and the house is fantastic as was the weather for May. Well equipped although a barbecue would have been ideal. Clean, fresh and ideally located for us. Local shop and owners were great, some good pubs in the vicinity with real ales and good food. Bleddyn was very helpful upon arrival and we enjoyed the welcome basket, went down a treat. Comfortable beds, lounges, well kitted out bathrooms. Definately back in the future, ticked all boxes. Ideally located for sightseers and daytrippers"

"This farmhouse is fantastic. The location was perfect for us, lovely grounds and views and a good base to stay. There was a local shop and lovely pub just a few minutes walk away. The farmhouse inside is tastefully decorated, lovely kitchen with large dining table and the beds were extremely comfortable. The owners left a welcome pack on arrival which was very thoughtful. We would highly recommend this farmhouse and hope to return!"
