About this property

Once the coach house adjoining the owners' historical C17th Welsh longhouse, this self-contained cottage at Dolgellau stands in 1.5 acres of landscaped gardens at the foot of Cadair Idris, with town facilities, beaches, walks, cycle routes and mountain biking in the surrounding area. Also Free Golf on the first three holes of the former Dolgellau Golf Club nearby.

Formerly the coach house adjoining the owners' historic C17th Welsh longhouse, Bryn-yr-Odyn Cottage is entirely self-contained, with its own private entrance at the rear. The cottage stands in 1.5 acres of landscaped gardens bordered by a mountain stream, on the outskirts of Dolgellau, at the foot of Cadair Idris. This is a tranquil, private setting, yet only a 10 minute stroll into the centre of town.

The cottage is ideal for a couple, but can accommodate up to three guests. There is night storage heating throughout, supplemented by a flame-effect electric fire in the living room and heated towel rail in the shower room. WiFi is available. The accommodation comprises:

Entrance Porch: a double glazed entrance porch at the rear of the building, leading into a small inner hallway. One step down into the:

Living Room: a spacious room with three-seater sofa and additional armchair, living flame-effect fire in modern surround, flat-screen TV with Sky Entertainment and Sports package, DVD player, antique desk and grandfather clock, and a small dining table and chairs in the bay window. To one side of the living room are folding partition doors leading to:

Single Bedroom: on the ground floor, with built-in wardrobe, drawer units and a chair.

Shower Room: also on the ground floor, with a contemporary suite, electric shower in cubicle, WC, basin in vanity unit, heated towel rail, shaver point and illuminated mirror.

Kitchen: with modern fitted units, electric single oven and ceramic hob with extractor hood over, microwave and integrated fridge. Guests also have access to a washing machine and freezer in the former stable immediately adjacent.

From the living room, carpeted open-tread stairs lead up to the first floor bedroom, which is open to the staircase.

Double Bedroom: with beamed, sloping ceilings and some limited headroom to the sides of this spacious room; double bed, built-in vanity area, wardrobe, two armchairs and a bookcase with a good selection of books.

En Suite: a small en suite cloakroom with WC and basin, is located adjacent to the top of the stairs, with three steps down into the cloakroom.

Note: this cottage retains many features of an old building, including sloping, beamed ceilings and several changes of level. The first floor is not suitable for the infirm and there are some steps between rooms on the ground floor.

Outside: to the front is space for one car and garden furniture is provided for use on the lawned area immediately to the front of the cottage, overlooking the owners’ gardens to which guests have access.

Golf: The first three holes of the former Dolgellau Golf Club, a short distance away, have been retained by the owner and are still being maintained to a high standard.  There are two par 4’s and a par 3 with a practise ground which is 200 yards long.  Guests staying at the Lodges and Bryn-yr-Odyn Cottage have exclusive use of the facility during their stay, free of charge.  The owner is a PGA Professional and is available for lessons or guidance if you wish to play many of the fine courses in the area.  This should be arranged prior to arrival.

Pets & Children: The owners are unable to accept pets, babies or children at the property as they have dogs of their own which are not used to other dogs or young children. Their own dogs will sometimes be unattended in the gardens.

Bryn-yr-Odyn Cottage provides an ideal base for walkers, cyclists and mountain bikers, standing as it does at the foot of Cadair Idris, surrounded by the mountains of South Snowdonia. Coed-y-Brenin Forest, with its walks and mountain biking trails, is 8 miles to the north, and the beaches of Barmouth and Fairbourne about 10 miles west. The Mawddach Trail provides a gentle off-road walking and cycling route along the Mawddach Estuary. Dolgellau is an interesting old market town with narrow streets and heavy stone architecture, a range of local shops, small supermarkets, pubs and cafés.

A relaxing and comfortable cottage in an excellent location for hill walking and coastal visits. Owner welcoming and friendly. We would recommend it.

An ideal location for accessing Mid Wales, easy walk into Dolgellau. Set in a lovely area and great owners who really do offer a friendly non intrusive welcome.

Bryn y Odr is a superbly presented property close to local amenities yet situated in a peaceful countryside location. The owners ensured every comfort was available and the welcome basket was a lovely touch. Furnishings were comfortable, especially the cosy bed and well equipped kitchen. There are many attractions nearby for all ages, you could never tire of visiting this area. The Corris craft centre and King Arthur’s Labyrinth is really worth a visit, as is the thrilling zip wire near Blaenau Ffestiniog. Coed y Brenin is a lovely activity centre where you can walk, hire bikes and go mental cycling round the monster or slightly tamer tracks as well as treetop adventures. Portmeiron is such an interesting place and a visit to Porthmadog to see the new steam train railway is essential. Walking can be toddler friendly or can stretch the fittest of us to the limit with heart racing climbs resulting in views to the edge of the world. Dolgellau has a great selection of restaurants, pubs abundant bistros BUT you will need to book in advance if hoping to eat there. We also recommend Cross Foxes for a super meal. Cader Cabs do a great local taxi service, very reasonable. Sunday lunch we recommend walk the Mawdach Trail from Dolgellau to the recently refurbished George III with a lovely view over the estuary. Again, booking is advised and don’t expect a quick meal but it is worth the wait. Precipice Walk near Dolgellau and Fisherman’s Walk near Beddlegert are both different and unusual walks with amazing views. Good walking shoes or boots recommended. Finally, Porthdinllaen (sorry about the spelling) with a walk around the headland at the Lleyn Peninsula, stopping to see the working lifeboat station, finally ending at the Ty Goch Inn on the beach, one of the secret beaches of Wales, for a well deserved beer is just beautiful.
