About this property

Short breaks and pets welcome

The cottage has been modernised from former shepherd's cottages to provide a luxury bothy style accommodation. Set in one of the most wonderfully wild areas of Scotland it provides a truly enchanting wilderness destination.   The nearest corner shop is approximately fifteen miles away and access to the cottage is along six miles of forest roads; alternatively you can catch a train to the request Halt at Altnabreach Station (450m), one of the most remote and little used stations in Britain.  The scenery is startling and opportunities for outdoor pursuits are almost endless be it walking, mountain biking, fishing and of course enjoying the superb flora and fauna of this wild area.

While you could spend a week at this cottage taking walks every day and not crossing the same path twice there is still good access to the other special sites and scenes in this fantastic area.   John O'Groats is close by with ferry links to Orkney making day trips to the islands possible. While just along the coast is Dunnet Head, the most northerly point of Britain,  with a superb sandy beach the bay is a Mecca for surfing.   If more gentle pursuits are needed then the late Queen Mother's summer retreat at Castle of Mey should not to be missed together with the awesome Castle Sinclair Girnigoe. This impregnable medieval stronghold is the most spectacular ruin in the North of Scotland and the only castle in Scotland to be listed by the World Monuments Fund.

Wildlife abounds throughout the area both on your doorstep at the cottage or indeed along the rugged coast line which varies from superb sandy beaches such as Dunnet Bay or Melich Bay together with rugged coastal cliff walks.   The cliff walks are worth investigating to savour the sights of puffins and kittiwakes together with the chance to see whales, dolphin and porpoises.   With the coastline so near and together with the lochs and burns closer to the cottage water sports and angling are superbly catered for and brown trout fishing is available on the owner's loch, Loch Dhu.

The location makes a superb holiday base from which to explore the local heritage of the area including the quaint busy fishing towns of Thurso and Wick as well as seeing the great outdoors of Scotland at its best, you can also picnic in the steps of HRH and enjoy a picnic at what must be one of Britain's most remote benches with a superb view over classic flow country.
