About this property

Argyll Country House nestles on a hillside in seven acres of peaceful grounds on the west side of the Kintyre Peninsula in Argyll, easily accessible by air, boat or road. This impressive baronial country house retains a wealth of period features and is set in mature gardens on the edge of the village of Clachan, one of the oldest settlements in Kintrye.

This is the perfect location for a Scottish Wedding/Civil Ceremony, Corporate Team Building/Training Events, a family get-together or a surprise party.

The bar is often a magnet for those just wanting to chat over a drink, while the dining room allows everyone to sit down to a meal together before ceilidh dancing, partying or just enjoying being together in the oak room or upstairs lounge. A new conservatory room overlooking the garden leads straight onto the barbecue area and is a light, bright room in which to relax or enjoy games and activities.

Argyll Country House nestles on a hillside in seven acres of peaceful grounds on the west side of the Kintyre Peninsula in Argyll, easily accessible by air, boat or road. This impressive Victorian country house retains a wealth of period features and is set in mature gardens on the edge of the village of Clachan, one of the oldest settlements in Kintyre.

Argyll Country House has twelve en-suite bedrooms, an additional children’s play/bedroom, three large public rooms, a fully equipped country kitchen, a Victorian dining room and a cosy gun room bar with a wood burning stove. A separate catering kitchen is available should you wish to arrange full or partial catering during your stay and we can provide a list of recommended caterers and sample menus on request. On arrival you will find the house warm with the fires and the stoves set. The rental includes all fuel, bed linen, towels and kitchen accessories together with a small selection of toiletries and cleaning materials. Hairdryers, tea making facilities and hot water bottles are in all rooms. Full laundry and ironing facilities are available for guests’ use.

Your own private bar is left empty for you to stock and run yourselves. There are always at least a few guests who love the novelty of running their own bar! The bar is well equipped and you will find everything you need including ice buckets, cocktail shakers, a bar fridge and glass washer. There are pipes for kegs of real ale and draft beer so ale drinkers can pull their own pints and have their barrel of choice delivered prior to arrival. We are also fully licensed and provide a full bar service and wine list for larger functions where guest numbers exceed 30.

A new conservatory room overlooking the garden leads straight onto the barbecue area and is a light, bright room in which to relax or enjoy games and activities including a 9' pool table.

The large mature garden has a fountain and also offers several options for strolling, relaxing and photo opportunities.

The Kintyre Peninsula is an area of outstanding beauty. It is off the beaten track but only 1-1.5 hour's drive from the tourist hot-spots of Inveraray and Oban. New visitors to Kintyre are often struck by the quiet roads and deserted beaches that offer a true "get away from it all" experience without having to travel hundreds of miles.

The area is popular with outdoor enthusiasts and the house is an ideal base for golf, sailing, surfing, deer stalking, horse riding, walking, cycling, wildlife/bird watching, fishing, whisky tasting, diving, painting and photography, as well as exploring local galleries, museums, historic sites, heritage centres and distilleries. There are a number of local golf courses including Machrihanish, the newly opened Machrihanish Dunes, Dunaverty, Carradale, Tarbert and Gigha. The first hole at Machrihanish Golf Club has been voted the best first hole in the world.

For sailors, there is an excellent harbour and sheltered anchorage in Tarbert which also plays host to the annual Tarbert Folk Festival, Tarbert Seafood Festival and several sailing events including the popular Scottish Series. The surrounding area is also well known for its beaches and unspoiled countryside, and the beautiful secluded beach of Dunskeig Bay is just a short walk from the house.

The Cowal Peninsula and the Islands of Gigha, Islay, Jura and Arran are all easily accessed by Ferry Services, which is only a short drive away. There is superb hill walking as well as the newly accessed Kintyre Way; an 86 mile walk opened in 2006 which is divided into sections enabling walkers of all ages and abilities to walk the length and breadth of Kintyre in relative isolation and safety. A scenic walk through Clachan village and up the hill takes you to the remains of an iron age fort and settlement from where there are panoramic views towards Gigha, Islay, Jura, West Loch Tarbert and Ireland. There is excellent sea and loch fishing and Balinakill House has fishing rights for two rods on nearby Loch Ciaran.
