Little Dunbar is a traditional estate worker's butt'n'ben cottage on the outside but has been beautifully restored for 21st century living on the inside to provide comfortable holiday accommodation for 4 people. Set in peaceful location with adjoining woodland, which is carpeted with snowdrops in winter and bluebells and primroses in spring. You will also have the chace to see the local red squirrels and the tuneful ensemble of birdlife whose home is in the woods. There are sea views from the living room and one bedroom over the fields to the Solway Firth, both also enjoy views of the lake district hills on the south side of the Solway Firth, it is only a short walk to the sandy beach at Powillemont
The cottage dates back to the mid 1700s and was probably being lived in at the time of John Paul Jones, who was born nearby and is famous for being the founder of the American Navy. The Paul Jones Museum whihc has been set up in his cottage makes for an interesting visit. A slightly longer stroll which takes in the beach will lead you to the village of Carsethorn and the Steamboat Inn where your effotrs may be rewarded with really good food, it is also dog friendly and has outside seating on the water's edge, so that you can enoy the views overthe esturary.
Arbigland Estate is the ideal base for mountain biking, birdwatching, golf or collapsing and revelling in the amazing surroundings. The South Carse equestrian centre is close by so you can bring your horse with you and keep him in the livery yard tto allow you both to enjoy riding on the beach and around the bridleways on the estate.
The marvellous wildlife and birdwatching at the RSPB Mersehead Reserve just a few miles along the coast should not be missed. The reserve is particularly spectacular in winter with thousands of geese and other over wintering wildfowl present but in summer is also worth a visit with pleasant walks through the reserve woodlands down to the beach. During the winter the reserve also runs Badger Watching and other events.
Cycling and walking are particularly well catered for with numerous coastal walks and also Forestry Commission Woodlands including the 7Stanes Mountain Bike Routes which have been laid out in a number of the Forestry Commission properties across the region. The closest of these are at Dalbeattie and Mabie Woods both of which provide superb and spectacular settings for quiet walks or testing strenuous mountain biking routes. The famous Southerness Links golf course is close by, together with other less testing courses in the local area.
If you are looking to explore Scotland's culture and heritage you are spolit for choice with numerous historic sites to explore including Sweetheart Abbey in New Abbey together with one of the oldest Corn Mills, also maintained by Historic Scotland.
